Microsoft Corporation Senior Software Engineer in Redmond, Washington

Microsoft's Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO+I) team is responsible for constructing and managing the datacenters that are essential to powering Microsoft's cloud business. By anticipating and provisioning for ongoing scaling, we play a pivotal role in enabling a significant portion of Microsoft's revenue through its Commercial Cloud. The CO+I Engineering team (CO+IE) delivers services, applications, and automation supporting datacenter planning, construction, and operation. We own a large portfolio of services, including workflows that enable predicable, lowest cost datacenter construction, telemetry systems that drive high availability and optimized energy usage, and task and performance management applications that help our operation run as efficiently as possible. CO+I Engineering is a competitive advantage for Microsoft, and an important pillar in its cloud success.

Within CO+I, the Cloud Operation, Innovation and Engineering (CO+IE) organization owns software solutions to enable cost effective execution of data center planning, operations and execution in every data center Microsoft’s cloud services, Azure, run in.

As a Senior Software Engineer in CO+IE, you will be responsible for end to end deliverables with a high degree of visibility. CO+I is a young organization within Microsoft, and as such, you will be responsible for envisioning, designing, coding, validating, and deploying new features from the ground up! We work at a fast pace, in an Agile environment. Being a foundational layer of Microsoft means that your individual work will have a broad impact across the entire company.

*This role is located either in one or all hub locations - Atlanta, GA, Washington, D.C., Redmond, WA, San Antonio, TX or Phoenix, AZ.

*Relocation support will be provided, and successful candidates must relocate or reside within 50 miles of the hub office location.

*This role is eligible for hybrid or remote work, up to 100%.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for a scenario.

  • Drives identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for a product, application, service, or platform.

  • Creates, implements, optimizes, debugs, refactors, and reuses code to establish and improve performance and maintainability, effectiveness, and return on investment (ROI).

  • Leverages subject-matter expertise of product features and partners with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project managers) to drive a workgroup's project plans, release plans, and work items.

  • Acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) and guides other engineers by developing and following the playbook, working on call to monitor system/product/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions, alerting stakeholders about status and initiates actions to restore system/product/service for simple and complex problems when appropriate.

  • Proactively seeks new knowledge and adapts to new trends, technical solutions, and patterns that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 2+ years experience in full stack development, including middle tier/backend technologies. Examples include C#, .NET, data technologies (SQL/entity framework/etc.), web services, REST APIs, JSON, XML and UI development technologies: JavaScript, HTML5, CSS, TypeScript, Angular, React.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.

  • Software development experience in any two of the following areas: Web and API development, UX technologies (Angular, React)

  • 3+ years technical experience architecting and building solutions on Azure or comparable cloud platforms

  • Excellent analytical skills and an ability to abstract concepts

  • Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills.

  • Experience in driving projects E2E as a tech lead while being a technical mentor to other developers.

  • Ability to work with business and PM partners to align expectations and deliver results.

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
