Meta Research Scientist Intern, Organic Materials - Optoelectronic Applications (PhD) in Redmond, Washington

Summary:

Meta Reality Labs brings together a world-class team of researchers, developers, and engineers to create the future of virtual and augmented reality, which together will become as universal and essential as smartphones and personal computers are today. And just as personal computers have done over the past 45 years, AR and VR will ultimately change everything about how we work, play, and connect. We are developing all the technologies needed to enable breakthrough AR glasses and VR headsets, including optics and displays, computer vision, audio, graphics, brain-computer interface, haptic interaction, eye/hand/face/body tracking, perception science, and true telepresence. Some of those will advance much faster than others, but they all need to happen to enable AR and VR that are so compelling that they become an integral part of our lives. Beyond working within current paradigms to realize our vision, Reality Labs are heavily invested in materials research and development at the fundamental level. This involves, but is not limited to, designing and characterizing materials yet to be discovered, for highly specific applications. Our internships are twelve (12) to twenty-four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.

Required Skills:

Research Scientist Intern, Organic Materials - Optoelectronic Applications (PhD) Responsibilities:

  1. Taking organic materials from concept through to the device level, performing a full suite of analysis, interpreting and understanding the impact of the results.

  2. Develop next generation of optoelectronic materials with an emphasis on advanced design, growth, and analysis, to prove new concepts and understand the potential impact of those concepts.

  3. Collaborate with the larger Meta Reality Labs Research team to holistically understand current goals, limitations, and bottlenecks in the wider AR/VR space.

  4. Design and explore novel crystal growth/processing techniques, with a focus on highly specific components and devices.

  5. Publish research results and contribute to research that can be applied to Meta product development.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a PhD degree in Physics, Chemistry, Optical Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or relevant technical field.

  2. Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.

  3. 2+ years experience in at least one of the following areas: chemistry, materials, organic materials, crystallization / solid state analysis, optoelectrical materials.

  4. 2+ years experience with solid-state analysis: e.g. diffuse reflectance, XRD, spectroscopy, DSC.

  5. 2+ years experience with conducting experimental laboratory work (i.e., demonstrated ability to take concepts, adapt them and translate them to the bench-top).

  1. Intent to return to the degree program upon completion of the internship.

  2. Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at relevant high-impact journals.

  3. Experience with the CCDC suite of software and others such as (e.g. BGMN, Profex, Olex2).

  4. Experience with Rietveld refinement.

  5. Experience in working and communicating effectively within a cross-functional team environment.

Public Compensation:

$7,313/month to $11,293/month + benefits
