Microsoft Corporation Principal Technical Program Manager in Redmond, Washington

Cloud Operations + Innovation (CO+I) is seeking a Principal Technical Program Manager to support the CO+I Datacenter Monitoring and Controls Engineering (DMCE) team. CO+I is responsible for planning, building and operating Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure data centers across the globe. Within CO+I, DMCE is the Critical Environment (CE) application owner for Microsoft to deliver consistent and reliable Industrial Controls systems. We execute, manage, and support Industrial Controls Systems and Telemetry solutions to ensure operator's visibility to their sites so they can react on infrastructure issues to avoid customer outages.

The role will be responsible for working with the leadership team in driving Global Industrial Controls and Telemetry programs, driving organizational initiatives to meet strategic objectives and priorities. This individual must have a blend of strategy, planning, data and analytics, communications, and technical program management skills. This role is located either in one or all hub locations - Atlanta, GA, Washington, D.C., Redmond, WA, San Antonio, TX or Phoenix, AZ.

Relocation support will be provided, and successful candidates will need to ​relocate or reside within 50 miles of the hub office location.

This role is eligible for hybrid or remote work, up to 100%.

Responsibilities

The Technical Program Manager (TPM) is responsible for creating and maintaining relationships with stakeholders and potential user groups of various teams that use Business Intelligence (BI) at Microsoft. The TPM will capitalize on these relationships to determine and facilitate the building of capabilities in BI that fulfill these needs and are extensible to other teams. The role involves converting needs into well-defined user stories and, in the case of new programs, epics that are then broken down into actionable tasks that can be executed by the Operations BI team.

Manage the Portfolio: Ensure all Global programs and initiatives are accounted for and tracked in a consistent way across the portfolio, making calculated recommendations on funding and resource adjustments where necessary, and applying governance to keep accurate and up-to-date status on all initiatives in flight. Define acceptance criteria that are aligned with user expectations for each of these user stories and tasks. Make sure test-driven development fulfills defined acceptance criteria.

Special Projects:  On an as needed basis, you will be asked to design and deliver high-impact, cross-team projects to meet the changing business environment. You will demonstrate successful project management and cross CO+I ability to partner.  

Maximizing/Extending the Leader

  • Leverages relationships to influence and advise on strategic decisions, content, and/or expertise. Leverages key partnerships to drive the agenda for the leadership team and ensure follow up. Manages and builds relationships with senior leaders. May interact with a broader array of high-level partners. Creates alignment within partnerships by providing an objective point of view, ensuring all voices are heard, synthesizing ideas, and creating an action plan.

  • Leverages knowledge of the leader's goals and business approach to ensure technical program activities are aligned with the leader's objectives.

  • Communications: Build and manage a wide array of communications that span both organizations including but not limited to drafting exec/GM level email communications, event specific PowerPoint presentations, and general organizational “walking decks”.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant field (e.g., Ln, Management, Industrial Controls or Mechanical/Electrical Engineering) AND 6+ years' experience in Program management, operations management, strategy, project management, human resources, or business-related roles

  • OR equivalent experience.  

  • 3+ years experience managing cross-functional and/or cross-team projects.

Other Requirements:

  • The ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements arerequired for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant field (e.g., Liberal Arts, Business Administration, Management, Industrial Controls or Mechanical/Electrical Engineering) AND 8+ years' experience in financial management, business planning, operations management, strategy, project management, human resources, or business-related roles

  • OR master's degree in relevant field (e.g., Liberal Arts, Business Administration, Management, Computer Science) AND 5+ years' experience in financial management, business planning, operations management, strategy, project management, human resources, or business-related roles

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • Demonstrate the ability to simplify complex business and technology self-starter with good industrial controls technical knowledgeand analytical skills.

  • Effective written, interpersonal communication and presentation topics.

  • Good attention to detail, passion for strategic thinking and problem solving, and ability to deliver rich business insights to drive business decisions.

  • Ability to work with a variety of people across the organization, including senior leaders, individual contributors, support staff and maintain confidentiality.

  • Ability to maintain good judgment in dynamic environments.

  • Ability to work in an ambiguous environment and effectively triage several competing priorities.

  • Work independently to balance multiple tasks and competing priorities simultaneously.

Technical Program Management IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
