Substrate Authentication team is one of the fundamental teams in Substrate responsible for building authentication and authorization stacks that provide user access into Substrate and inter-service communication within the Substrate. The team mission is to provide secure, reliable, and resilient authentication and authorization layers for the Substrate and on-premises configurations, including our partners, and to serve as the gatekeeper for the core Microsoft 365 resources.

We are looking for an engineer who is passionate about security, technical challenges, debugging and above all – customer success and satisfaction. Familiarity with the modern authentication methodologies and security fundamentals is a big plus. Not only are you going to become an expert in the security field but will also learn and appreciate first-hand how to build highly available distributed services of planetary scale working for thousands of businesses and millions of consumers around the world.

We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer who enjoys solving massive scale challenges and embraces the cultural values of inclusion and belonging. Your work will be high impact with initial delivery in less than 6 months. Great core development skills are necessary to have, and we strongly prefer candidates who have expertise in the areas of building and evolving large-scale services.

Responsibilities

This Principal Software Engineer opportunity will allow you to make a broad positive impact that will include building appealing developer experiences, solving complex algorithmic problems, forging real-time troubleshooting tools via complex data models, streamlining our monitoring systems, evolving our metrics to enable large scale performance optimizations, or even enabling intricate business/engineering processes.

As an engineer, you will be responsible for implementing features towards a wide variety of business applications and services within Office 365 products portfolio as well as ensuring they are done to meet rigorous quality standards with the result being software that is used by individuals and businesses throughout the world.

As the Principal Software Engineer on the Substrate Authentication team, you will be responsible for:

  • End-to-end ownership of a feature area related to authentication/authorization, responsible for all aspects of designing, developing and deploying the solution

  • Close interactions with cross-functional discipline contributors (product managers, architects, security engineers, support engineers)

  • Leading by example and mentoring others to produce extensible and maintainable code used across products.

  • Leading efforts to optimize, debug, refactor, and reuse code to improve performance and maintainability, effectiveness, and return on investment (ROI).

  • Identifying best practices and coding patterns and provides deep expertise in the coding and validation strategy.

  • Research, architect, develop and deliver solutions in an evolving agile development environment.

  • Participation in the on-call rotation

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

o OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python o OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

o OR equivalent experience.

  • Proficient development and unit testing in C#/C++.

  • Experience with design and implementation of enterprise-scale services.

  • Working knowledge of Distributed Systems and Cloud Technologies.

  • Working knowledge of authentication protocols, security, and identity concepts.

  • Communication skills and experience working across disciplines and functions.

  • Experience as an engineering manager, or a technical lead with a passion for coaching and mentoring others.

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
