Viva Goals is a goals management SaaS solution that enables teams and organizations to define and manage their goals easily and effectively. As part of the Microsoft Viva suite, Viva Goals integrates into employee experiences, empowering teams and individuals to manage their goals from anywhere, and helps individuals foster a culture of accountability, transparency, and alignment, ensuring that everyone is working towards the same objectives.

We are currently on a mission to reimagine and simplify the process of goals management for teams/individuals using the power of data (from other work-related systems) and AI. We are building a V2 version of the product from the ground up using both Microsoft and approved open source technologies. We are seeking a motivated Principal Software Engineer who will help us on this journey of building a large-scale enterprise-ready product.

Responsibilities

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will be responsible for architecture, development, and operation of core backend services that power various features and scenarios in Viva Goals. You will build next generation goals platform that integrates advanced distributed systems for storage, caching, message, streaming and offline processing using latest Azure technologies. Your expertise in distributed computing systems will be pivotal as you enhance the architecture and efficiency for enterprise scale. You will lead efforts to optimize data storage, improve computational efficiencies, and ensure strict SLAs are met for both online scenarios and offline workloads.

The responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to comprehend and identify user requirements, scope solutions, estimate work, and schedule deliverables.

  • Lead discussions on the architecture of products or solutions and apply engineering principles to establish robust and maintainable architecture and designs.

  • Leads by example to produce extensible and maintainable code used across products.

  • Guides team and acts as an expert for Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) and mentors / monitors other engineers across product lines, working on call to monitor system/product/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions.

  • Remains current in skills by investing time and effort into staying abreast of current developments that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated coding abilities and experience with design patterns of large, high-scale applications.

  • Experience designing, building, and maintaining highly available services in a large service-oriented architecture (SOA).

  • Experience in software engineering practices, solid foundation in data structures, algorithms with proven testing, debugging and analytical skills. 

  • Experience with multi-threaded/parallel programming. 

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
