Microsoft Corporation Principal Software Engineer - Azure Storage Client in Redmond, Washington

The cloud is at the core of Microsoft’s future, and Azure Storage organization is the fundamental core of Azure which today provides exabytes of storage across the globe.

We (Azure Storage Client team) are responsible for delivering the Storage Virtualization platform to Azure VMs. Our stack handles trillions of IOs every day from Azure VMs and runs in 100s of data centers and 1000+ Clusters. We own the whole software stack on Azure Host responsible for handling VM I/Os (Internetwork Operating Systems), various caches, Throttles, QoS for Azure VMs, different transport layers (TCP\HTTP\RDMA), and encryption of data in transit and at rest. Our team built the Write accelerator feature in a record short time, which delivers the fastest persistent writes amongst all major public cloud providers.

As a Principal Software Engineer working in the Azure Storage Client team, your mission is to ensure Azure platform is performing reliably, highly available, secure, and delivering consistent I/O performance, can scale on-demand, and engineered to withstand the unprecedented computing demand from the customer workloads. We are looking for engineers who can help us to continue to evolve our software stack and also help with our next set of challenges like innovations to reduce I/O latencies to microsecond range at 99.999 percentile, innovative ways to update complete I/O stack with zero impact to the VM, hardware innovations to offload Host processing, secure data by encrypting in transit and at rest, building the next Gen AI for Monitoring and auto-diagnostics of distributed IO subsystem that handle Billions of IOPS and be the core of the intelligent cloud.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop system software that manages storage services in Azure.

  • Ensure that services and components are well-defined, modularized, secure, reliable, diagnosable, actively monitored, and reusable.

  • Rapidly deploy cloud-scale solutions and monitor health through telemetry.

  • Drive for quality in everything you do and continuously improve the quality of the systems you work on.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: .

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science Computer Science or related Engineering field or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, or C++,

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 6+ years of experience with Design, Development, and Debug skills.

Other Qualifications:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related Engineering field

  • OR related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, or C++,

  • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related Engineering field or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, or C++,

  • OR equivalent experience

  • Experience with Public Cloud Computing AND virtualization, operating system, and I/O system,AND Storage protocol, especially NVMe spec.

  • Communication and cross team collaboration skills.

  • Ability to handle open-end questions, drive clarity, and identify opportunities.

  • Interest in learning New Technology and innovating.

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
