The Artifical Intelligence (AI) Platform organization at Microsoft builds the end-to-end Azure AI stack and is core to Azure’s innovation and differentiation, as well as all of Microsoft’s flagship products, from Office to Teams, to Xbox. We are the team building Azure OpenAI, Azure Machine Learning (ML), Cognitive Services, and the global Azure AI infrastructure for running the largest AI workloads on the planet.

As one of Microsoft’s most exciting AI initiatives, speech recognition (SR) is driving the accuracy and robustness of natural user interfaces with natural spoken language and their deep integration to user facing products/services from Microsoft's 1st party or 3rd party application. The Speech Group develops speech recognition features in Enterprise, Entertainment and Desktop and Mobile products including Teams, Office, Bing, and Xbox. In Large Language Mosel (LLM) and Copilot era, more interesting and exciting scenarios are lighted up for Speech applications.

As the modeling team in the Speech Group, our team pioneered the industrialized deep learning speech recognition technologies, and contributed key innovations to the speech community. We focus on solving the most challenging industry problems by applying and inventing the best speech recognition algorithms. To this end, we are looking for a Principal Applied Scientist who is passionate about applying the technologies to Microsoft products to benefit millions of users, and pushing the boundary of state-of-the-art speech recognition technologies.

Responsibilities

• Lead the effort to solve speech product issues across all processing chains, including model development, test and quality control, deployment and user feedback stages.

• Apply and invent the state-of-art speech recognition technologies for Microsoft products.

• Design and implement new speech features in LLM/Copilot era

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

• OR Master's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

• OR Doctorate in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

• OR equivalent experience.

• 5+ years experience in Speech, Natural Language Processing or Machine Learning R&D in an academic or industrial setting.

• Experience with large-scale and distributed computing, and programming with scripting languages.

• Experience with machine learning/deep-learning tools.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

• Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications:

• PhD in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research).

• Proven track record on delivering speech recognition technologies to products.

• Fast turn-around in implementing and developing algorithms.

• Ability to be a great team player with effective communication skills.

• Growth mindset and self-motivated.

• Ability to think outside the box.

Applied Sciences IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
