Summary The position is located at VA Loma Linda Healthcare System. The primary purpose of the Lead Dental Laboratory Technician provides leadership and direction for other dental laboratory technicians. Assigns workload in a manner consistent with skills of technicians and needs of staff dentists. Is responsible for quality control evaluation of in-house and contract lab product. Maintains inventory of gold and other laboratory materials. Responsibilities Duties include, but are not limited to: Ensures that laboratory equipment is in good working order and replaced as needed. Communicates with contract laboratories regarding quantity and quality of work, and other specific issues as needed. Distribute and balance the workload among employees in accordance with established workflow or job specialization, assure timely accomplishment of the assigned workload, and assure that each employee has enough work to keep busy. Maintain a current knowledge and answer questions of other employees on procedures, policies, directives, etc. and obtain needed information or decisions from the Chief on problems that come up. Maintaining all in house and outside contract lab orders. Make available written instructions, reference materials and supplies for any activities for learning. Ensuring a common standard of practice and care is demonstrated throughout the Dental Service. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/30/2024. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-09 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-07. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. This position has INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT (IOR) which is a basic requirement that must be met to qualify for entry into this job series, and it is something that cannot be waived. To meet the basic requirement for the Dental Laboratory Aid and Technician series, applicants must demonstrate one of the following: Specialized Experience: Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Use of dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials. Use of laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment. Use of precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers. Construction of dental prosthetic appliances. OR Education and Training: Successful completion of a full 4-year apprenticeship program consisting of at least 2000 hours a year. The successful completion of training courses in dental laboratory work in the Armed Forces or other Federal agencies will be allowed appropriate credit for specialized experience on a month-for-month basis up through GS-5. Licensed professional dentists will be considered qualified for any grade level if they have, in the aggregate, the required experience in dental laboratory procedures. In addition to the IOR you must qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-07 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Experience navigating Computer-Aided-Design (CAD)/Computer-Aided (additive and subtractive) Manufacturing (CAM) technologies including but not limited to sirona/exocad/exoplan/bluesky bio/hyperdent); nstructing and training dental technicians in the fabrication of fixed prostheses; designing and fabricating simple and complex fixed and removable prostheses (including implant prostheses) with both traditional and CAD/CAM methods; casting all dental alloys by using electrical or oxygen/natural gas procedures; operating and caring of laboratory porcelain ovens, vacuum investing equipment, burnout ovens, centrifugal metal casting machines, CAD computers, 5-axis mills, resin printers, and related fixed Prosthodontic laboratory equipment. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: No special physical exertion is required. The work is primarily sedentary though some work may require periods of standing. The regular and recurring work of the position involves sitting at a desk, conferences, meetings, etc., and occasional visits to activity work sites.
