AltaGas - Sr. Operator/ Chief Power Engineer

Location: Joffre Ethane Extraction Plant (JEEP) – 20 minutes east of Red Deer, Alberta

Reports to: Lead Plant Operator

Work Schedule: 10-hour day shifts, 4 days per week, with shared on-call responsibility and occasional night shift coverage. Must be able to work overtime, nights, and weekends if required for call-outs and business demands.

Position Summary

The Senior Operator is responsible for the daily operations of the Joffre Ethane Extraction Plant (JEEP), including troubleshooting, overseeing site personnel, and communicating operational activities. The role requires strong adherence to safety, environmental, and operational standards. The incumbent must be available for a shared on-call schedule and occasional shift coverage, including night shifts.

What You'll Do:

  • Operations & Troubleshooting: Ensure the safe, efficient, and environmentally sound operation of JEEP equipment and connecting pipelines. Troubleshoot process issues and collaborate with team members and external experts as needed.

  • Emergency Response: Provide rapid identification and response to emergencies. Follow and enforce Emergency Response Procedures (ERP).

  • Process Improvement & Training: Work with the Lead Operator and Operations Superintendent to improve site-specific training, process safety management, and special projects. Review and update operating procedures regularly or as needed.

  • Crisis Management: Respond to unit upsets, adverse conditions, or serious situations, coordinating with team members, management, and external experts as required.

  • Compliance & Safety: Ensure all work activities adhere to AltaGas guidelines, Environmental, Occupational Health, and Safety (EOH&S) standards, and relevant codes of practice. Report and address any safety concerns to the Lead Operator or Superintendent.

  • Equipment Maintenance & Permitting: Participate in pre-job meetings and work permitting processes. Prepare equipment for maintenance following process and safety procedures, including lock-out/tag-out, personal protective equipment (PPE), and confined space entry.

  • Site Upkeep & Housekeeping: Maintain housekeeping standards in assigned units and promptly address any safety or environmental hazards.

  • Skill Development: Continuously improve professional competence by learning new systems and processes as they are implemented. Act as a leader and assist all team members with their growth and skill development.

  • Incident Reporting: Report all health, safety, security, environmental, and EOH&S management system incidents, including concerns and near-miss events.

  • Maintenance Assistance: Assist the maintenance department with general maintenance duties as required.

  • Work Order Generation: Generate and enter work orders in Maximo for supervisor review.

  • HSE Inspections & JHSC Membership: Participate in plant HSE inspections and serve as a member of the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) as required.

  • Confidentiality: Maintain the confidentiality of sensitive company and/or plant-specific information.

  • Flexibility: Be willing to work required overtime, nights, and weekends as necessary for the safe and effective operation of JEEP.

What You Bring:

  • A valid ABSA 3rd Class Power Engineering Certificate is required. A 4th Class Certificate will be considered with demonstrated progress toward 3rd Class certification.

  • 5-10 years of process plant operations experience, preferably in gas plants with liquids extraction or NGL fractionation. Progressive experience preferred.

  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, including the capacity to lead and mentor a team and foster a collaborative and safety-conscious work environment.

  • DCS (Distributed Control System) or control panel experience is an asset.

  • Ability to quickly identify and respond to deviations in plant operations to maintain safety and minimize downtime.

  • Understanding of environmental impacts, health, safety, and security risks.

  • Certifications: H2S Alive, First Aid CPR, and Confined Space Entry are required.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to read and interpret operating manuals and Plant P&IDs.

  • Proficiency in JDE, Microsoft Office, and Maximo is an asset.

Where You'll Work:

The Joffre Ethane Extraction Plant (JEEP) is a gas extraction straddle plant with a gross production capacity of 10,400 Bbls/day of ethane and natural gas liquids (NGLs). Located strategically just outside of Red Deer, Alberta, JEEP processes valuable liquids for commercial and industrial users, including end-use markets in Edmonton.
