JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Penn State Berks Not One MorePeace and Justice Project is launching a violence intervention and prevention program for youth in Reading and Muhlenberg Pennsylvania. We are seeking part-time outreach workers.

The Not One More violence intervention program (VIP) is a collaborative effort among community agencies and organizations, faith communities, and schools to reduce violence among youth in our target areas. Secondary goals include reducing the duplication of services among local youth service agencies, promoting information sharing, and better connecting youth who are at-risk for violence to community resources from which they may benefit.

Outreach workers are credible messengers that can relate to the target population (individuals at highest risk for involvement in violence). They are considered credible messengers because they are a part of the community we are serving, they can relate to the individuals they will work with, are respected by them and have the ability to positively influence them. Often, these individuals are credible because they have “been there and done that,” but are now promoting positive change. Outreach workers can reach the target population in ways that others cannot because they are trustworthy, influential, and empathetic. Outreach workers are unique in that their experiences, skills and reputation allow them to play a role in combating violence.

Outreach workers help develop and implement strategies to reach youth at-risk for violence. They will have a caseload of participants to mentor and with whom to create violence elimination plans (VEPs). VEPs are designed to assist youth with meeting needs that can eliminate the possibility of violence in their lives including job readiness, life skills, education, resources, etc. Outreach workers will work closely with program staff to help manage their caseloads and support youth in executing their VEPs.

Job Duties

Outreach Workers may need to work non-traditional hours including nights and weekends.

Outreach Worker Responsibilities:
