Overview

The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division of PNNL is accelerating the transition to a decarbonized, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through basic and applied research. We leverage a strong technical foundation in power and energy systems and advanced data analytics to drive innovation, transform markets, and shape energy policy.

The Power System Modeling Group leverages capabilities in power systems engineering to develop and advance methods for modeling and simulating the transmission, distribution, and use of electric power. This group stewards capabilities in: Bulk Energy System Modeling, Grid Edge Modeling, and Power Markets.

Responsibilities

The Power System Modeling Group is seeking a PhD Intern to support long-term power system planning studies and other high-impact research related to the U.S. electrical grid. The intern will collaborate with PNNL staff to work on powerflow and dynamic simulations in positive sequence simulators such as PSSE/PSLF to conduct interconnection grid studies. Additionally, the intern will perform a variety of tasks, including automating the modification of powerflow cases, analyzing simulation results, and deriving insights about evolving grid dynamics in the future.

Additionally, the candidate is expected to actively participate in the dissemination of results by preparing technical reports and contributing to peer-reviewed publications.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college.

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a PhD in electrical engineering or a related field.

  • Possess a bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field.

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher preferred.

  • Excellent writing and communication skills.

  • Strong scripting skills using Python, Matlab, EPCL.

  • Knowledge with PSLF, PSSE tools.

  • Having ability to run dynamic transient stability simulations for large scale grid studies and experience in developing user-defined dynamic models would be an added plus.

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements

In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, new employees are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

For foreign national candidates:

If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO)risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
