The State Highway Administration's (SHA) District 2 - Queen Anne's County is currently recruiting for a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician (HEMT) I position. Please only apply if you are willing to work in the Centerville Shop Facility. The eligible list produced from this recruitment will be utilized to fill HEMT I vacancies within SHA in the specified county only.

Nature of Work:

The HEMT I will learn to perform routine maintenance and repair on a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment including diesel powered, electronic computerized, and fuel injected equipment. This position requires knowledge of basic principles of operation & construction of diesel and gas powered engines; knowledge of proper use, care and maintenance of various standard hand tools; knowledge of repair and services concepts, principles, testing devices, tools, meters, etc. involved in the repair & servicing of heavy road maintenance equipment, and maintain records & prepare reports. This position will learn to operate heavy equipment in order to perform test drives.

Qualifications

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: One and one-half years of experience servicing, maintaining and repairing motor vehicles, gasoline and/or diesel engines, or heavy-duty construction equipment.

Notes:

  1. Applicants may substitute documented and relevant experience repairing, servicing and maintaining automobiles, trucks, buses or comparable equipment on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

  2. Completion of an accredited training program for Heavy Equipment or Diesel Repair may be substituted for one and one-half years of the experience. The accrediting body for the training program must be listed on the U.S. Department of Education's Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs.

  3. U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as described under the Minimum Qualifications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

  4. Certification as a Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for two years of the required education. (The two years of experience used to qualify for ASE testing is considered an integral part of this substitution and cannot also be considered separately to meet Education Minimum Qualifications.)

  5. Certification as a Master Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for the required education.

Licenses & Certifications

  1. Employees are assigned duties that require the operation of motor vehicles. Employees must possess and maintain a Class C motor vehicle operator's license valid in the state of Maryland.

    All applicants must list their license number and expiration date on the application.

    1. Employees are required to obtain and maintain a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) valid in the state of Maryland during the probationary period, depending on the type of equipment operated.

      1. Employees must satisfy the first level of the employing administration's certification program during the probationary period. Failure to satisfy the first level of qualifications within the stated time will be considered grounds for dismissal.

Special Requirements:

This position is considered essential and is subject to 24-hour / seven days a week call in with response time within less than an hour.

Candidate must possess and maintain a driver’s license valid in MD (with less than four (4) points and obtain a Class B CDL License with appropriated medical card within six months after appointment.

This position is a safety sensitive position subject to Drug/Alcohol testing as stated in MDOT Substance Abuse Policy.
