Provo Police is hiring a Crime Scene Technician to provide investigative technical support work for the Police department.

This position involves the collection, documentation, and preservation of evidence related to criminal activity. Civic-minded individuals qualified to perform these duties and interested in supporting the law enforcement services provided to Provo residents are strongly encouraged to apply.

What is the compensation package?

(G26) $24.84 - $34.25 per hour (depending on experience) plus a substantial benefits package.

  • Identify, collect, and preserve evidence at crime scenes evidence including, but not limited to bodily fluids, fibers, hairs, and weapons.

  • Take photographs of various crime and accident scenes.

  • Drive evidence van and when requested, tow crime scene trailer to crime scenes.

  • Visually examine and chemically process physical evidence in the laboratory using various developing and processing techniques.

  • Collect video surveillance evidence; produce frame-by-frame still images, clearer images, overlays, or clean-up; and perform digital forensic information extractions from mobile phones and other electronic devices and convert into digital copy form.

  • Prevent contamination of evidence.

  • Inspect and process confiscated vehicles for evidence.

  • Preserve chain of custody on evidence.

  • Collect, package, and send evidence to the Utah State Crime Lab for laboratory testing.

  • Testify as to the proper collection and preservation of evidence and written reports in court proceedings.

  • Prepare and maintain various records, logs, reports, and databases.

  • Regularly take inventory of, submit orders for, and stock equipment and supplies for the department laboratory, crime scene van, crime scene trailer, evidence bay, and detective crime scene kits.

  • Assist police officers and other staff members as needed and perform other related duties as required.

    What are the minimum qualifications?

Provo City will honor equivalent combinations of job-related education/experience [substituting each 1 year of post-secondary educations/training for 6 months of experience].

  • Associate degree in Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, or related field.

  • Two years of experience working with forensics or evidence, preferably in law enforcement agency.

  • A valid, lawful driver license.

  • International Association for Identification Certificate preferred.

    What is the selection process?

Applications will be reviewed in the order they are submitted, with the first screening being held on September 30, 2024. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications listed above to be eligible for consideration.

If selected for hire, candidate will be required to successfully pass a drug screen and criminal background check. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal. Applicants with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
