BYU Biology Teaching Assistant - 130859 in PROVO, Utah

Job Summary

We are looking to hire an individual to be a teaching assistant for BIO 120, Field Biology, at Brigham Young University. This class focuses on working in the field, in nature. The candidate will be responsible for maintaining class organization in coordinating field trips, class communication, and managing assignment due dates. They will help students learn different modes and methods of field biology including plant and animal identification, working and camping in the backcountry, recording scientific and personal notes in the field, writing reports and scientific papers, and demonstrating a variety of biology-related data collection methods. Significant organizational skills to manage the logistics of these trips is essential. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Attend all class periods and planning sessions with the instructors as needed. 
  • Attend and help manage all field trips. 
  • Grade projects and assignments.
  • Organize single and multi-day field trips for a group of 20+ people. 
  • Assist instructors in mentoring students and answering their questions.
  • Clean and organize the classroom and equipment following class and field trips. 

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

  • Familiarity with local Utah plant and animal identification.
  • Experience conducting various methods of data collection in the field.
  • Experience in camping and hiking in the backcountry. 
  • Ability to lead a group of people in outdoor activities. 
  • Strong skills in using Microsoft Suites such as Excel.
  • Valid driver¿s license and a clean driving record. This includes BYU certification by be a van driver. 
  • At least 2+ years of biology coursework or biology-related work experience.

     Preferred Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of arcGIS and data collection systems such as Survey123, and FieldMaps.

  • Experience using plant and insect taxonomic keys. 
  • Ability to interact with a variety of people from all kinds of backgrounds.
  • Familiarity in organizing class portals and course management systems such as Canvas or Learning Suite.
  • Proficient in the use of nature apps on phones, such as iNaturalist, iBird, Merlin, and Seek.
  • Ability to problem-solve in a calm, positive, and flexible manner. 
  • Experience with CPR and First Aid, and with Wilderness First Aid. 
  • Capacity to teach a wide variety of biology topics both in front of a classroom and one-on-one.

Approximate Starting Salary: $14.00 - $16.50/hour
