BYU AV Events Engineer (OIT) - 130695 in PROVO, Utah

Job Summary 

As a member of the AV Productions team, this position will provide or oversee live production support for Office of Information Technology (OIT) customers, specifically in Audio Production. The OIT AV Production team provides events services on a 24×7 basis to all of Brigham Young University, for a wide variety of clients and venues. All events are considered important, and many are high profile, including international broadcasts of events. The person filling this position will fill the role of Production Manager, overseeing all aspects of assigned events, including crewing, scheduling, design, production elements, customer vision, and event success. This person will specialize in audio support and provide audio support or supervise/direct others who provide audio support for these events. 

The individual filling this position must possess a great commitment to the University, as well as outstanding diplomacy and grace. This person must possess exemplary professionalism and inspire confidence in the AV department's ability to consistently produce excellent support for all events. 

Responsibilities for this position include: 

  • Work as a front-of-house audio engineer at high-profile events. Events include but are not limited to football, basketball, and other athletic events, concerts, campuswide devotionals and lectures 
  • Work as front-of-house mixer, monitor mixer, A2, RF coordinator, systems tech, QLab programmer/operator, or any other position, as needed on-campus events 
  • Coordinate event specifics, including the ordering of food for employees 
  • Collect and organize work schedules for student employees (25-30 employees) 
  • Schedule employees on projects and events 
  • Mentor student employees. Not only should technical competence and good work habits be taught and modeled, but also values such as respect, integrity, teamwork, good customer service, innovation, and accountability 
  • Work with management to resolve escalated issues 
  • Oversee workflow processes from pre-production through production to post-production and documentation 
  • Train AV Event Productions audio team employees 
  • Create pull sheets, diagrams, and suitable drafting documentation for events 
  • Develop and update training and succession programs to ensure continuity of operations 
  • Supervise inventory entry and asset tracking 
  • Create and perform audits on the accuracy of the inventory 
  • Plan and specify equipment for purchases according to annual budgets 
  • Evaluate fair pay rates for employees and freelance contractors 
  • Coordinate maintenance and improvement projects with employees and other AV departments and teams 
  • Attend skills training sessions and internal training sessions

Entry Professional (Level 52): Associate degree or two years of a combination of education and related experience required minimum. ($61,500 to $80,000 is the approximate starting salary range) 

  

Early Career Professional (Level 53): Bachelor's degree or four years of a combination of education and related experience required. Bachelor's degree and related experience preferred. Supervision experience preferred. ($69,000 to $89,500 is the approximate starting salary range)

  

Professional (Level 54T): Bachelor's degree and two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience required. Bachelor's degree and two years of related experience preferred. Supervision experience preferred. ($83,000 to $107,500 is the approximate starting salary range) 

 

Senior Professional (Level 55T): Bachelor's degree and five years of related experience, or master's degree and 3 years, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience is required. A minimum of 2 years of technical supervision experience is required. ($96,500 to $125,000 is the approximate starting salary range)

This position requires the following skills/abilities/traits: 

  • Experience with live sound reinforcement in athletics, concerts, and corporate shows. 
  • Proficiency with professional audio equipment and software, particularly Yamaha, Allen & Heath, Shure, L-Acoustics, D&B audiotechnik, and Netgear 
  • Strong organizational skills and efficiency in Microsoft Office or Google Docs 
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication, leadership, and customer service skills 
  • Ability to troubleshoot during performances 
  • Ability to work nights and weekends 
  • Passion for mentoring students 

Preferred Skills:

  • Excellent computer skills/knowledge including Vectorworks, Rentman, Asana 
  • 1-3 years' audio production experience, or a degree in media arts, or another related field 
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn applicable OIT business applications software (e.g., Workday, Chrome River) 
  • Ability to multi-task and follow through with details 
  • Ability to work independently without supervision 
  • Supervision skills, and the ability to train entry-level employees 
  • Team/work participation
