Brown University Associate Director of Finance and Operations in Providence, Rhode Island

Job Description:

Reporting to the Vice President for Alumni Relations, the Associate Director of Finance and Operations will be responsible for the direct management of several key accounting and reporting functions within the Department, including budget planning and forecasting, financial and regulatory reporting, and financial research and analysis. This position is responsible for University finances and has a role in managing Brown Alumni Association finances. (The Brown Alumni Association is an independent 501(c)3 organization that must function as a successful P&L within the context of University operations.)

The Associate Director will have oversight for managers’ submission of hourly payroll and ensure proper tracking of staff attendance. The Associate Director will also lead, manage, coach, and mentor team members; both those directly connected to the processing of financial transactions and those responsible for revenue-centered programs. They will work closely with program leaders and their staff, to educate them regarding financial procedures and to explore how the finance coordinator can support program operations. They will directly supervise the Department’s financial, administrative, and operational staff, overseeing their portfolios of work.

The Associate Director will have a demonstrated ability to lead and manage in a fast-paced, demanding, and high transaction volume environment with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness; and the ability to multi-task and work under tight deadlines. A results-oriented leader with a high energy level, strong work ethic, and high degree of organization, the Associate Director must be a self-starter who requires little supervision; they must be an excellent presenter with strong verbal and written communication and collaboration skills; have strong interpersonal and communication skills; and be experienced in effectively communicating key data in a user-friendly and concise manner to individuals with varying levels of financial acumen, including presentations to program managers, senior management, and Board members. Keen analytic, organizational, and problem-solving skills, which allow for strategic data interpretation versus simple reporting, are necessary. The Associate Director should be able to synthesize disparate sources of information to help the Vice President and other staff gain new insight into the Office’s business operations.

Job Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Minimum 5 years experience in a related field, such as finance, program management, organizational operations, organizational management, or nonprofit administration.

  • Minimum 3 years experience managing budgets.

Required Qualifications

  • Preference for experience in financial analysis and budget planning/forecasting.

  • Requires expertise in the field of procurement for materials and contracted services, including Professional Service Agreements, RFPs, etc., as well as in the areas of cash control and accounts payable.

  • Proficiency with database, spreadsheet, and word processing applications (Google Workspace, Microsoft Word, and Excel preferred), along with demonstrated comfort in dealing with calendar programs and the Internet.

  • Keen analytic, organizational, and problem-solving skills which allow for strategic data interpretation versus simple reporting.

  • Staff management and program building experience required or completion of Brown’s Leadership Certification Training program.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data in a user-friendly and concise manner to individuals with varying levels of financial acumen, including presentations to program managers, senior management, and Board members.

  • Proficient knowledge of the principles and procedures used in budget preparation, accounting administration, and development of internal control. Also requires professional knowledge of the theory, principles, and procedures of accounting, auditing and financial management, along with advanced math skills to perform an array of business and statistical calculations and expertise in compliance with all federal and state regulations.

  • Professional knowledge of the principles and techniques used in financial analysis and research, and the ability to convert financial information and outcomes into reports of findings, and develop conclusions and recommendations.

  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize complex and technical work processes to meet schedules and timelines.
