The Power Systems Technician supports the operation of the NSTX-U experimental power systems consisting of two (2) large, stored energy, Motor-Generators (each Generator rated at 450 MVA) and the Field Coil Power Conversion (FCPC) high power thyristor rectifier inventory. The Power Systems Technician provides support for all maintenance, testing, repairs, upgrades, installations, modifications and troubleshooting of the Motor-Generators and the FCPC thyristor converters and the associated subsystems.

Responsibilities

Core Duties

Provides Motor Generator maintenance support (daily/monthly/annual activities) including all subsystems and components such as power transformers, cycloconverters, excitation systems, liquid rheostats, instrumentation calibrations and controls, HV and MV (Medium Voltage) circuit breakers, switchgear, distribution systems and protective devices.

Provides FCPC maintenance support of all power conversion equipment, consisting of multi-megawatt thyristor rectifiers, current limiting reactors, isolation and grounding switches, hardwired control systems and various protection, measurement and monitoring systems.

Supports troubleshooting of MG and FCPC systems and components.

Assists with MG and FCPC equipment operations and testing during run periods.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • * Successful completion of the PPPL Apprenticeship Program as an Electrical Technician.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • * Understanding of the operation of MG and FCPC equipment and associated subsystems.

  • *

    Knowledge of the routine maintenance activities associated with MG and FCPC systems.

  • *

    Ability to use various electrical and electronics test equipment for troubleshooting MG and FCPC systems.

Physical Requirements'

  • * Must be able to work in awkward positions, confined spaces, bend, climb, lift and/or move heavy objects up to 50lbs.
