What is a Utility Thermal Energy Network Engineer?

The Utility Thermal Energy Network (UTEN) Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing geothermal energy systems. This includes evaluating potential sites, planning, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and performance tracking of UTENs. The engineer follows all required codes and standards and ensures the safe and efficient extraction and distribution of geothermal energy.

What does a Utility Thermal Energy Network Engineer do?

Typical assignments could include, but not be limited to:

  • Site Evaluation : Conducts geological surveys and analyzes data to determine the suitability potential

  • System Design : Designs networks, including well fields, network distribution pipes, and heat extraction/distribution systems. Develops and updates construction standards and operations and maintenance procedures

  • Project Management : Oversees drilling operations, pipeline installations and building conversions. Develops comprehensive project plans, including timelines, budgets, and resource allocation

  • Team Coordination & Collaboration : Leads and coordinates the efforts of engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders involved in the project

  • Community Engagement: Works with community leaders, municipalities, and customers

  • Regulatory Engagement : Interfaces with staff from the Department of Public Service

  • Performance Tracking : Monitors, evaluates, optimizes, and documents the performance of the UTEN

  • Reporting : Prepares and presents regular progress reports to stakeholders and senior management

What does it take to be a Utility Thermal Energy Network Engineer?

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering

  • Strong project management and leadership skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn new computer software programs

  • Must be available to respond to gas and electric emergencies outside of normal business hours

  • Must perform all tasks safely and design with safety in mind

  • Work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment

  • Flexibility to multitask and operate under pressure in a fast-paced work environment

  • Valid driver’s license

Preferred:

  • Field of study in mechanical, civil, or electrical engineering

  • PMP Certification

  • Knowledge of building codes and safety regulations

  • Experience with large-scale energy projects

This position has a career path which allows for advancement opportunities within a job series. The title and level are commensurate with experience. Pay range: $78,900 – $187,600
