Southern Ohio Medical Center RCP III/Registered Respiratory Therapist Specialist in Portsmouth, Ohio

  • GENERAL SUMMARY

  • Works under the supervision of the Manager of Respiratory Therapy. The RCP III Specialist's primary job function is to provide high quality respiratory care delivery to the SOMC patient population in accordance with hospital policy. Performs other duties as assigned

  • QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education:

  • High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required

  • Graduate with certificate of completion from a two or four year CAHEA-approved program in Respiratory Care or graduate of a COARC program of Respiratory Care required.

  • Current BLS training with re-certification every two years required

  • Licensure:

  • RT(OH) required

  • RRT required

  • ACCS and/or NPS and/or AE-C credential required

  • BLS within 90 days of hire required

  • NRP within 6 months of hire required

  • Experience:

  • Work and/or educational experience that promoted group/team working relations is preferred.

  • Minimum three years post graduate experience in the practice of respiratory care is required, two years specific to acute care delivery and one to two years of tertiary level respiratory care experience preferred.

  • Interpersonal Skills:

  • Must be able to effectively communicate with physicians, nurses and other allied health/hospital employees in stressful conditions. Demonstrate ability to communicate in verbal and written fashion, promoting a team approach to patient care.

  • Essential Technical/Motor Skills:

  • Must be able to skillfully operate a wide variety of respiratory care equipment in stressful conditions, demonstrate clinical competence with patient care. Inputting of data/typing, calibration of equipment.

  • Essential Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent walking, frequent lifting of up to 25 lbs and occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs, standing for long periods of time.

  • Essential Mental Requirements:

  • Must be able to effectively work in a variety of stressful situations, conducting calculations, interpreting lab, testing values, special attention to detail and problem solving abilities.

  • JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

  • The following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.

  • Delivers medical gas administration through various types of devices.

  • Administers humidification, aerosols and aerosolized medications.

  • Performs postural drainage and chest physical therapy.

  • Delivers hyperinflation therapy (i.e. IPPB, IS).

  • Demonstrates for patient education the use of home treatment systems (i.e. Peak Flow, Spacer) .

  • Collects and reports patient information as an aid to planning of respiratory treatment programs.

  • Performs nasal tracheal and artificial suctioning for sputum samples and documents as appropriate.

  • Draws and collects blood for arterial sampling and documents as appropriate.

  • Conducts pulmonary function testing for bedside spirometry and peak flow assessments.

  • Performs endotracheal intubation/extubation, manages natural and artificial airways, and supervises RCP I and II with management of natural and artificial airways.

  • Sets up monitor and manage noninvasive and invasive equipment used for ventilatory support.

  • Performs tests to determine the patient's ability to be liberated from mechanical ventilation.

  • Uses assessment and documentation of patient progress to evaluate patient response to therapy.

  • Pre-cleans, decontaminates and transports contaminated instruments according to policy

  • Performs intermediate-level disinfection and/ or high level disinfection per the Instructions for Use (IFU) by the manufacture. This includes ensuring the scopes or probes used within the department are cleaned, disinfected, maintained and stored per the IFU’s.

  • Attends Critical Care Committee and/or OBGYN Committee quarterly meetings.

  • Maintains active AARC membership.

  • Precepts new employees/students in Critical Care and/or neonatal/pediatric areas.

  • Provides both departmental and/or nursing education opportunities on critical care and/or neonatal/pediatric policies, procedures, and protocols.

  • Aids in the development, education, and implementation of critical care and/or neonatal/pediatric policies, procedures, and protocols.

  • Aids in the assessment of staff for yearly competencies.

  • Other job duties as assigned.
