Summary This position of supervisor of the Veterinary Medical Unit (VMU) is located in the Department of Research and Development at the VAMC in Portland, Oregon. The VA Animal Facility consists of the following animal study areas: receiving, quarantine and animal rooms, food storage area, treatment area, disposal area, surgical suites, wash area for animal equipment and caging, procedural laboratories for specialized animal research, an animal Cesium irradiator, and two satellite animal facilities. Responsibilities THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Responsible for the organization, management, and supervision of the VMU and its staff. Responsible for the day-to-day operation and management of assigned rooms and areas within the animal facilities. Involved in interviewing and helping the Veterinary Medical Officer (VMO) make decisions concerning hiring VMU employees. Receives animal subjects, equipment, supplies, and services delivered to the Animal Facility. Assists Veterinary Medical Officer (VMO) and Administrative Assistant in VMU cost accounting, yearly budget preparation, daily record keeping, and recommends VMU service charges. Prepares and maintains various species of animals, in programs of research, testing, development and training, as substitute models for the study and understanding of human health and disease. Documents findings of research investigations and provides their judgment assessment of the findings for the investigators. Assures the appropriate care and use of animals used in research with the assistance of the VMO, the Research Staff, and the Veterinary Medical Unit staff. Establishes, monitors, and supervises husbandry practices to ensure that all animals are maintained in appropriate enclosures under proper sanitary and other required environmental conditions. Provides guidance to research scientists regarding sources of variously defined species or strains of animal subjects, proper enclosures and surrounding environmental conditions for different animal species, experimental animal techniques of handling and manipulation. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-10 GRADE LEVEL, YOU MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. The specialized experience required for some positions in this series is normally work performed in a controlled environment. Examples of qualifying specialized experience includes research activity or control program work; nursery work that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment; work comparable to that with a large dairy farm where production records, animal environment, and sanitary conditions were kept in accordance with modern dairy practice. Farming experience that was not performed in a controlled environment, or experience as a laborer who was not responsible for planning and scheduling his/her own work, but only performed assigned tasks, would not qualify as specialized experience. Additional specialized experience includes performing duties such as: overseeing the day-to-day operation of a laboratory as a lead and/or supervisor with the ability to perform various duties in an animal research center such as animal husbandry procedures, biomedical research, and all applicable regulations governing the use of animals in research. Physical Requirements: Work can require long periods of standing and or walking as well as long periods of sitting. Duties in the facility necessitate the ability to lift loads of up to 50lbs pulling pushing, bending, stretching, and restraining fractious animal.
