Advance Local Social Media Producer / Visual Journalist in Portland, Oregon

How about taste-testing the latest Portland culinary delight or visiting an iconic Oregon site in front of a live social media audience?

The Oregonian/OregonLive in Portland is looking for a full-time Social Media Producer/Visual Journalist with a track record of growing audience, producing engaging content and experimenting with emerging platforms. Our talented, award-winning and collaborative social media team is up for anything, and were looking for someone with that same kind of energy and enthusiasm.

This position gives the opportunity to do it all, including talking through strategy as legacy social media platforms change and new platforms emerge. We want to be where our audience is, and you will be expected to help us be there in smart, forward-thinking ways. We are looking for someone who enjoys variety, is skilled at juggling multiple projects, thrives in a fast-paced environment and we cant say this enough -- is game for anything.

What youll do:

  • Use social media best practices to grow audience and engagement

  • Leverage social media to build the subscription base for OregonLive

  • Promote newsroom contenton relevant social channels, making tweaks to content where appropriate to maximize impact

  • Create content to reach audiences on platforms that support alternative story formats and to engage users on established platforms with modified versions of local content

  • Keep current on content to quickly react and even anticipate what will best play on certain channels

  • Create content to suit platform needs and reach audiences

  • Create content to reach maximum audience engagement for ambitious newsroom projects

  • Collaborateclosely with colleagues on oursocial media and visuals team to produce social cards, Reels, tweet threads, social-first videos and other content

  • Engage with the audience and moderate comments

  • Be flexible to work nights and weekends

The ideal candidate has:

  • Minimum 2 years Journalism experience and/or a college degree in Journalism or similar field

  • Solid news judgment and journalistic ethics

  • Headline writing andcopy-editingskills

  • Experience responding in breaking news situations

  • Ability to collaborate on projects

  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once, from conception to publication

  • Ability to work independently and remotely

  • An understanding of metrics and how to leverage platforms to reach maximum engagement

  • An understanding of the type of content that plays well on social media, and how to use various tools, including wire stories, to maximize reach

  • Reliable transportation to meet with sources or cover events

Bonus, but not required:

  • Photography and photo-caption writing

  • Video production experience

  • Podcast production experience

  • Drone certification

  • Knowledge of Adobe applications Photoshop and Premiere Pro

  • Fluency in a language other than English that is widely spoken in Oregon
