Microsoft Corporation Senior Systems Engineer in Portland, Oregon

We are looking for a Senior Systems Engineer to join the team.  As a Systems Engineering team member, you will work directly with engineers across cross-functional teams and deliver hardware solutions and testing designs.  Responsibilities will include interacting directly with Microsoft’s cloud services teams, cross-discipline design teams focusing on the functional interfaces and developing test cases and qualifying the designs.  This is an opportunity to leverage and grow your existing hardware design/validation experience and provide innovative E2E hardware solutions to Microsoft Cloud.

Microsoft Silicon + Cloud Hardware Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission. CHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Skype, OneDrive and the Microsoft Azure platform globally with our server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions.

To achieve this goal, the Cloud AI & Advanced Systems Engineering (CAASE) team is instrumental in defining and delivering operational measures of success for hardware manufacturing, improving the planning process, quality, delivery, scale and sustainability related to Microsoft cloud hardware. Responsibilities

  • Be part of concept design discussions, gathering of node/rack system level requirements, clarify interfaces, provide feedback into future design requirements to develop robust, high-performance cloud hardware solutions.

  • Lead of cross-boundary issue triage, debug, and resolution.

  • Gather all system engineering requirements for infrastructure components by working with engineering groups and other stakeholders.

  • Develop node and rack system level test cases, design tests against system level requirements and verify them for functionality at node and rack level.

  • Architect test scenarios and guide software engineers to automate test flows.

  • Work with ODMs, other system engineers, internal design teams and customers to develop validation execution plans for new technologies and MSFT IP features.

  • Development of quality criteria for different phases of programs

  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to ensure systems meet significant quality, reliability, and service level requirements for a cloud environment.

  • Work with ODMs, silicon vendors, other component suppliers and internal design teams on cross-boundary triaging, debugging, and resolving issues.

  • Review system engineering and validation coverage throughout the lifecycle of the program and publish plan vs. progress reports.

  • Guide Systems engineers on test case development, automation, test execution and debug.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field

  • 7+ years of relevant experience in server hardware or mass storage device development and test engineering with a solid understanding of hardware, firmware, and OS interfaces.

  • Experience with testing complex system level designs and ability to debug to root-cause - identifying potential fixes to hardware components, firmware components, or OS.

  • Experience with architecting and optimizing system and device level test scenarios and guiding software engineers to automate test flows.

  • Fundamental knowledge is requiredregardingServer Architecture and Mass Storage Devices at a block level,Electrical/Power/Thermal hardware design principles and HW/FW/OS interactions.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experienced in debugging complex system level issues and ability to root-cause/identifying potential fixes down to board hardware, signal integrity, thermal and firmware components and OS arerequired.

  • Experience with platform-level usage of test instruments including, but not limited to PCIe protocol analyzers, SAS/SATA protocol analyzers andCPU JTAG tools.

  • Experience with evaluating hardware designs, HW/FW/OS interactions, platform configuration trade-offs, performance tuning and optimizations.

  • Technical communication skills (verbal and written) for technical discourse with cross-functional technical leads and leadership within and/or outside of the development organization.

  • Experience with IO sub-system performance and stress tools (fio, Iometer, Stressapptest, Y-Cruncher, etc.)

  • Experience with system integration validation (EVT, DVT, PVT) of new hardware + firmware designs

  • Experience with prototype hardware and bench testing methodology

  • Experience with firmware development will be an advantage.

  • Deployed server fleet debug experience will be an advantage.

Hardware Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
