SIGMADESIGN has collaborated with a manufacturing company seeking an experienced Lead Test Engineer to join their facility in Portland, OR. This company designs and manufactures electrical power distribution and control systems.

  • $85,000 - $140,000 annually/DOE

    Primary Function:

    The Lead Test Engineer will coordinate and conduct tests on low and medium voltage power distribution equipment, ensuring compliance with industry standards and internal specifications. They will oversee testing protocols, analyze data, and manage testing projects while maintaining safety and quality standards. Additionally, they will mentor junior engineers and technicians, providing leadership and technical support.

    Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities:

  • Manage, supervise, and conduct tests on low and medium voltage power distribution systems, such as switchgear, circuit breakers, and transformers, while adhering to industry standards and company requirements.

  • Prepare test setups, including fixtures, power supplies, instrumentation, and data acquisition tools, ensuring accuracy and repeatability throughout testing processes.

  • Perform reliability and performance evaluations on both new and existing products undergoing testing or recertification.

  • Collect and analyze test data, identify trends and irregularities, and work with engineering teams to diagnose and resolve issues.

  • Create and maintain test procedures, safety protocols, and documentation to comply with regulatory and internal quality requirements.

  • Organize testing schedules, manage priorities, and ensure projects are completed on time.

  • Oversee third-party laboratory testing when internal resources are not sufficient, as well as coordinate shipments and manage equipment logistics.

  • Assist in assembling and modifying test setups, ensuring proper operation and calibration of lab equipment for accurate testing.

  • Provide leadership to junior engineers and technicians, offering mentoring and technical support.

  • Work closely with engineering, product, manufacturing, and quality teams to drive improvements and address technical challenges.

    Education and Experience: (Knowledge, skills, & abilities)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.

  • At least 4 years of experience in testing or engineering, ideally within the power distribution industry.

  • Solid knowledge of electrical concepts, testing methodologies, and standards such as UL, CSA, IEEE, and IEC.

  • Preferred familiarity with laboratory standards like ISO 17025 and UL’s Data Acceptance Program.

  • Hands-on experience with power testing tools, data acquisition systems, and automated testing.

  • Demonstrated commitment to safety protocols, especially in power distribution testing, including lock-out/tag-out procedures, grounding methods, and handling medium voltage systems.

  • Proficiency in data analysis tools and programming languages, such as Python or LabVIEW, is highly preferred.

  • Strong problem-solving abilities, keen attention to detail, and excellent communication and teamwork skills.

  • Leadership experience in managing projects or teams, with the ability to work independently and efficiently prioritize tasks in a dynamic environment.

    Work Environment:

    Standard office environment with normal amounts of office related conditions. Occasionally may be required to work in environmental conditions that emulate typical user environments in order to facilitate design testing and validation.  Occasionally may be required to travel as required to other facilities, clients or suppliers.
