The Position

Job Appointment: Full-Time

Typical Schedule: Schedule will vary by bureau.

  • Portland Parks and Recreation: Thursday - Monday, 8am - 4:30pm

  • Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT): Monday - Friday, 6am - 2:30pm

  • Fleet and Facilities: Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4pm

  • Bureau of Environmental Services (BES): Monday - Friday 6am - 2:30pm. Flexible start/end times, as well as alternate schedules, are available, after serving 6-month probationary period.

Work Location: Various locations throughout the city.

Position Summary:

Are you a skilled electrician looking for more than just a paycheck? The City of Portland is seeking qualified electricians who are ready to make a meaningful impact in the public sector.

Electricians install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of electrical and instrumentation equipment, electrical systems, sub-systems, circuits, and controls such as motors, service equipment, generators, controllers, electrically operated valves and pumps, welding machines, electronic controls, microprocessors, transformers, services, branch circuits including traffic control circuits and other components/facilities as assigned. Work varies from bureau to bureau but could include rigging guy wires, installing signal heads and streetlights, splicing cable, repairing, and installing appliances and light fixtures. In some instances, responsibilities may include working on alarm systems, instrumentation, distributed control systems, communication systems, and/or PLC programming and repair.

Work also includes implementing scheduled maintenance programs using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). Work may involve off-hour standby, various work shifts/hours, weekends, and, occasionally, mandatory overtime.

About the Positions:

Electrician (Parks) : Portland Parks and Recreation performs electrical maintenance, installation and repairs on parks, golf courses, ballfields lightning, community centers, swimming pools, tourist attractions and visitor centers such as Pittock Mansion and Pioneer Courthouse Square, as well as other park bureau facilities throughout the city. The type of electrical work would include a wide range of commercial and industrial electrical applications. This position will also include work involving motor, HVAC, and lighting controls as well fire and alarm maintenance and installation.

This is General Journeyman Electrician position. This position operates a variety of tools and equipment including aerial lifts and crane trucks. Parks Electricians regularly work alone and are involved in planning and organizing assigned job tasks including coordinating work activities with other crafts when needed. At times there will be a need to provide an immediate to situations such unexpected shutdown of electrical equipment and unsafe conditions are posed a risk to the public. This is an essential role, requiring the employee to report to work regardless of weather conditions or city office closures.

SSL - Locates/Logistics Electrician (PBOT): This Electrician position is in the Signals & Street Lighting (SSL) Locate section of the Traffic Systems and Operations Group. The main duties of this Journeyman electrician position will be to locate underground facilities for traffic signals, street lighting systems, fiber, and interconnect throughout the City. Job duties include connecting test equipment to live low/high voltage circuits, daily computer and field verification of existing underground infrastructure using locating equipment while working in traffic, working alongside moving traffic, and working in inclement weather conditions to meet daily deadlines. This is an essential role, requiring the employee to report to work regardless of weather conditions or city office closures.

SSL - Electrician (PBOT) : The Electrician position in the Signals & Street Lighting (SSL) section of PBOT's Traffic Systems and Operations team involves maintaining and repairing the city's extensive traffic systems, including over 1,100 traffic signals, 55,000+ streetlights, 100 rectangular rapid flash beacons, 170 school beacons, and various communication components. The role includes building, troubleshooting, and repairing traffic signal and street lighting systems, setting poles, installing conduits, pulling wire, and working over and alongside moving traffic while ensuring safety through traffic control and flagging. The position requires working in all weather conditions, including inclement weather, and using hand tools for tasks like digging when necessary. This is an essential role, requiring the employee to report to work regardless of weather conditions or city office closures.

Fleet and Facilities: This position is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems within a variety of buildings and structures, such as offices, schools, public spaces, and other municipal facilities. They work with wiring, lighting, power distribution systems, and electrical controls to ensure that all systems are safe, functional, and compliant with local and national electrical codes. Their tasks can include troubleshooting electrical issues, performing routine inspections, upgrading outdated systems, and ensuring energy efficiency. Facilities electricians play a crucial role in ensuring that essential public services and spaces remain operational and safe for employees and the community.

BES: This position provides essential support to the E&I program by addressing electrical and automation issues for equipment and systems involved in the treatment and conveyance of wastewater and stormwater at the Columbia Boulevard and Tryon Creek Wastewater Treatment Plants, the Combined Sewer Overflow system, and 98 pump stations citywide. Under the direction of the E&I Manager, this role involves installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining electrical and automation systems, responding to system failures and emergencies, ensuring safety and proper equipment operation, conducting diagnostic tests on systems like programmable logic controllers (PLCs), maintaining records and equipment supplies, and organizing work assignments. This is an essential role, requiring the employee to report to work regardless of weather conditions or city office closures.

To Qualify

The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:

    Preferred Qualifications Bureau of Environmental Services:

  • Experience working with (installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining) power distribution and protective relaying equipment up to 15KV, in an industrial setting.

  • Experience working with (installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining) motor controllers – full voltage, reduced voltage, variable speed - and motor protective equipment up to 5KV, in an industrial setting.

    Preferred Qualifications Fleet and Facilities:

  • Experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems associated with HVAC equipment, boilers, chillers, and refrigeration systems.
