Statement of Job:

The University of Southern Maine’s School of Social Work is seeking a part-time faculty members for our Fall 2024 semester, beginning September 3, 2024 and Spring 2025 semester.

We are searching for an instructor(s) to teach courses the following semester-long (14 week) courses. All classes will meet in person on the Portland campus.

Examining Oppression and Valuing Diversity (SWO 365) - This course is designed to provide a framework for understanding and respecting cultural diversity. The cultural aspects of race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and ableness will be discussed. A central theme in organizing the course is the examination of the role of oppression in shaping the lives of members of various cultural groups.

Methods of Social work Practice II (SWO 402)- This course explores the contextual nature of generalist social work practice within a strengths-perspective. Emphasis will be placed on the processes of engagement, assessment, and intervention with individuals, families, and groups. Family systems, group, and crisis models of intervention will be presented. This course must be taken concurrently with SWO 411 (Field Work I).

Field Work I & II (SWO 411 & SWO 412) - This is a senior year course for social work majors taken concurrently with Methods of Social Work Practice II (SWO 402 (https://catalog.usm.maine.edu/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=3&coid=5667) ). Students are required to engage in a year-long internship of 16 hours per week in approved agency settings, designed to relate social work theory to practice under professional supervision. This is a two-course sequence: SWO 411 is in the fall; SWO 412. SWO 412 is taken concurrently in the spring with Practice III, SWO 403.

Part-time faculty members are paid on a credit hour basis based on prior teaching experience. Qualifications:

  • An earned MSW degree from a CSWE-accredited social work program.

  • A minimum two years post-MSW practice experience - more experience preferred.

  • Demonstrated expertise in the content area of the course to be taught.

  • Prior teaching experience and/or supervisory experience in social work.
