Portage Public School ESL Paraprofessional in Portage, Michigan

Paraprofessional - ESI (Special Education)

M  - F 10:30 to 2:40 Portage West Middle School * *$13.52/Hour+

*Job Summary: *Under the direction of the teacher, the ESL Paraprofessional provides instructional assistance to students in the district who are non-speakers of English. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists teacher in teaching language arts to non-native English-speaking students using appropriate learning activities.
  • Instructs pupils in basic communication skills to facilitate transition into the regular instructional program.
  • Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adopt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil to the extent possible.
  • Work with individuals or small groups of students on follow-up activities. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Regular and consistent attendance.
  • Must have knowledge of and comply with the policies and procedures contained in the Portage Public Schools Employee Handbook.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent. 
  • The equivalent of 2 years of college (60 semester credits) or an Associate's degree or higher *OR *the successful completion of the MDE approved Paraprofessional standards test (ETS).
  • Experience working with children. 
  • Demonstrated abilities in the area of interpersonal communication.
  • A high degree of patience, ability and willingness to learn new skills and take direction.
