McLaren Health Care Unit Assistant Nurse Assistant -part time - McLaren Careers in Port Huron, Michigan

Position Summary:

Responsible for taking on a variety of administrative tasks that support nursing unit operations and the delivery of effective

and efficient services to meet the needs of patients and families. This

includes establishing and maintaining efficient communication, accurate data

entry, maintaining inventory of identified forms and supplies, and other

support activities. Provides health care

for patients under the direction of a nurse. Assists patients under their care

with day-to-day tasks, playing a vital support role.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

:

  1. Helpspatients by responding to intercom requests; obtaining needed servicesfrom nurses, licensed practical nurses, physicians, aides, and otherhospital personnel.

  2. Greets visitors in person or on thetelephone and answers inquiries; relays calls to patients; givesdirections; refers inquiries to nursing and physician staff.

  3. Performs varied administrative tasks such as answeringthe phone, greeting visitors, maintaining department logs & reports,scheduling appointments, typing, filing, copying, faxing and orderingoffice supplies and equipment supplies to ensure the functionality andcoordination of the department’s activities.

  4. Performs avariety of computer/data entry functions to support patient care includingestablishing and maintaining patient record; may enter nursing andphysician notes and orders;handling themajority of a patient's paperwork, such as discharge, admission, andpersonal information forms.

  5. Ensures compliance with all health careregulations, including HIPAA and OSHA.

  6. Answers patient calls anddetermines how best to help them.

  7. Provides physical support for patients with dailyactivities and personal hygiene, including bathing, dressing, getting outof bed, using the toilet, walking, standing or exercising.

  8. Turns and repositions bedridden patients.

  9. Ensures patients receive appropriate diet byreviewing their dietary restrictions, food allergies, and preferences. Providesencouragement and support with eating.

  10. Obtains and uses a wide range of information fromphysicians, caregivers and nurses about patient condition, treatmentplans, and suggested activities to provide appropriate patient care.

  11. Measures and records food and liquid intake andurinary and fecal output and reporting changes to medical or nursingstaff.

  12. Records vital signs, including blood pressure,pulse, temperature, and respiration rate as requested by staff or asordered.

  13. Examines patients to detect issues requiringmedical care, including open wounds, bruises or blood in urine.

  14. Delivers compassionate support, attention, andassistance to patients and families.

  15. Maintains safe and clean working environment andprotects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control, hazardouswaste and other policies and protocols.

  16. Perform other related duties as required and directed.

  1. Strongcustomer service skills and proficient computer literacy.

  2. Strongcommunication and organizational skills.

  3. Functionalcompetence with basic medical terminology.

  4. Demonstrated ability to receive a wide variety and highvolume of information and to disseminate information to the appropriateindividuals with efficiency and accuracy.

  5. Competencyin applying the principles, methods, materials and equipment necessaryinproviding service.

  6. Ability to work effectively with a variety of teams andpersonalities.

  7. Current knowledge of functional area theories,practices and techniques per discipline.

  8. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a varietyof concrete variables in situations where only limited standardizationexists.

  9. Knowledge and skill with common officesoftware applications.

  10. Compliancewith the Code of Ethics and Guide for Professional Conduct.

  11. Abasic understanding of patient care, medical terminology, coding procedures,reference tools, and appropriate clinical pharmacology for nurse assistantpractice scope.

  12. Excellentinterpersonal, organizational, and customer service skills.

  13. Familiaritywith electronic medical health care record systems.

Position/SubsidiarySpecific:

  2. Provides for admission and discharge needs of pediatric,adolescent, adult and geriatric patients under the supervision of licensednursing staff.

  3. Attends at least fifty percent (50%25) of the unit meetings;reads and initials minutes of meetings not attended; reads memos,procedures, communication book.

  4. Contributes to the effective communication and efficientoperational needs of the unit.

  5. Demonstrates a commitment to continued self-growth andmaintenance of competency.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High schooldiploma or equivalent.

  • StateCertified Nursing Assistant or 6 months experience

  • One (1)year prior unit assistant or front medical office secretarial experience unlessgraduate of a relevant training program.

  • One(1) month of job-related experience and/or training.

  • BLScertification

Preferred:

  • Successful completion of a health unit coordinatorcourse.

  • Associate degree in related field.
