Position:Skilled Labor Coach

Report to:Equipment Coach

Job Description Overview

The Skilled Labor Coach will play a crucial role in coaching and training on the proper use of equipment, tools, and field craft necessary for project execution. The ideal candidate must be enthusiastic about growing our labor force in craft fundamentals, be able to communicate and assist the Equipment Coaches to teach a class of up to 20 people, learn to understand simple digital reporting mechanisms, and believe in safety in training above all things.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the Equipment Coaches in various tasks for training preparation and delivery.

  • Assist with facilitating the onboarding of new hires, ensuring a smooth transition into the organization.

  • Provide hands on coaching to apprentices, laborers and operators for various equipment tasks and craft standards under the supervision of the Equipment Operators.

  • Ensure compliance with equipment guidelines to manufacturer specifications.

  • Assist in the development of training programs for laborers on the efficient and safe use of hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment.

  • Assist the Equipment Coaches in fostering a culture of equipment responsibility and care.

  • Train laborers on job site tasks with an emphasis on quality control (QC) measures.

  • Coach best practices to enhance productivity while maintaining high standards of workmanship.

  • Instruct laborers in the interpretation of construction plans and blueprints.

  • Develop Laborer’s ability to understand and follow project specification requirements.

  • Coach and teach fundamentals of working with job site grades.

  • Prepare Laborers to use surveying equipment correctly for field operations.

  • Train Laborers on the proper installation of stormwater pollution prevention plans (SWPP), teaching environmental compliance.

  • Understand and coach students on erosion control measures and sediment management fundamentals.

  • Instruct Laborers on traffic control procedures and safety measure on construction sites.

  • Assist in teaching students the importance of adhering to traffic control plans for the safety of both workers and the public.

  • Conduct comprehensive training on concrete work, including mixing, pouring, finishing, and curing.

  • Receive and prepare to fulfill job-specific training needs based on project requirements.

  • Assist the Equipment Coaches on collaboration with project managers and field leaders to tailor training programs to meet unique demands for various jobs.

  • Travel as needed to assist with training needs.

Education and Qualifications

  • Minimum 4+ years of construction experience. Civil and/or heavy industrial construction experience is an asset.

  • Post high school craft training in related field.

  • Ability and willingness to work different schedules on job sites and be trustworthy to safely travel.

  • Ability to work under minimal supervision to achieve schoolhouse goals.

  • Must be able to demonstrate professionalism in a business environment.

  • Team player.

  • Good oral and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrate the potential to grow in planning, leadership, organizational and communication skills.

  • Have confidence to communicate and interact with all levels of leadership in the organization.

  • Possesses a good aptitude in organizational skills.

  • This position is based on a 45–55-hour workweek.

  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as required.

  • Ability to communicate to individuals and groups and inspire them to grow professionally.

    Working Conditions & Physical Demands

  • Frequently required to sit; talk or hear; and use hands to handle, or touch objects or controls.

  • Regularly required to stand and walk. On occasion the team member may be required to stoop, bend or reach above the shoulders.

  • Travel from site to site will be required.

  • Work environment will normally be an active construction site. Exposure to dust, noise, high heat, extreme cold, and rain should be expected.

  • Team member must be physically able to perform repetitive motion and heavy lifting, as described below.

  • Must be able to maintain effective audio and visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties.

  • Must wear all employer-mandated personal protective equipment, including hard hat, safety glasses, ear plugs, safety vests, and safety-toed work boots. Other PPE may be required from time to time depending on special safety concerns. All PPE will be provided by the company at no cost to the employee, other than safety boots.

  • Must be able to hear with or without the use of a hearing device and clearly see at least 30 feet with or without the use of corrective vision lens. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

  • The team member must be able to differentiate and / or identify colors.

  • Must be able work while wearing a respirator if necessary.

  • Alternate standing and walking on uneven terrain surfaces, such as hillsides, muddy and icy soils, and other working surfaces. Safe negotiation of all types of surface conditions will always be required.

  • Continual lifting of up to 50 lbs. for distances of 30 feet or more.

  • Constant pushing and pulling of certain tools and materials will be required over a day’s work.

  • Must have knowledge of occupational hazards in construction field and standard safety practices. Must be able to pass the 30 Hour OSHA testing and First Aid/CPR requirements before starting work.

  • Must complete and meet requirements under the physical demands of this job description through a pre-employment physical examination.
