Maguire Forest LLC is seeking two motivated and enthusiastic Recreational Forester Interns to join our team for the summer. The role provides an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in forestry management, recreational development, and environmental stewardship in a beautiful natural setting. The property is over 1,000 acres and features 3 streams and 1,500-ft of shoreline a 100+ acre pond.

Responsibilities:

  • Selective Harvest Marking: Mark trees for selective harvest on 50 to 100 acres of the property. The goal is to remove low-quality and low-value trees to enhance views of the pond and promote healthy forest growth.
  • Trail Building: Help construct walking trails across the property to expand access and enhance recreational opportunities. This involves trail layout, clearing, and building sustainable pathways through diverse forest ecosystems.
  • Shoreline Protection: Collaborate in the clearing of trees along the shoreline within the guidelines of the Shoreline Protection Act.
  • Primitive Campsite Development: Help establish campsites along the shoreline and throughout the property. Work alongside the family that owns the property, who will be camping on-site and actively involved in campsite development. The owners have added internal roads, GMP electricity, and permits to install a septic system and water well this summer with contractors.

Goals:

  • Enhancing trails, building campsites, and creating scenic views to improve the property\'s recreational potential, while maintaining sustainable forest management practices.
  • Collaborate with the property owners to create a welcoming and accessible recreational forest.

Forest Attributes:

Neal Pond Forest comprises diverse forest ecosystems with a mix of hardwood and softwood species. The property spans 1,000+ acres and features variable terrain, ranging from gently sloped areas to steep hillsides. The forest is characterized by well-drained and productive soils that support healthy tree growth.

Tree species include sugar maple (19%), spruce/fir (16%), yellow birch (12%), red maple (11%), aspen (8%), white pine (7%), white birch (6%), black cherry (6%), beech (4%), and common associates such as tamarack, cedar, and hemlock. The forest\'s average sawlog diameter is 12.5 inches, with an average diameter of 9.0 inches for all products.

Requirements:

  • Enrolled in or recent graduate of a forestry, environmental science, natural resource management, or related program.
  • Strong interest in forestry, outdoor recreation, and environmental conservation.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic outdoor environment.
  • Basic knowledge of forestry principles, tree identification, and trail construction is preferred.
  • Physical fitness and ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Skill Building:

  • The Recreational Forester Interns will begin their internship by meeting with a licensed forester to establish a selective harvest plan and agree on forestry goals. The licensed forester will provide ongoing support and supervision as needed.
  • The Recreational Forester Interns will report to a general contractor for campsite development and trail building. The contractor will provide training on using saws and various tools for campsite development.

Additional Benefits:

  • Interns may camp anywhere on the 1,090-acre property during the internship period if they want to stay there.
  • A \$1,000 stipend will be provided at the beginning of the internship to purchase a tent and camp materials if the intern wishes to stay on the property th oughout the summer. These camp materials will remain at the property at the end of the summer.
