About the position

The Southeast Region is seeking 1 Wildlife Technician (4.75 months) to assist with the regional wildlife management program in Pocatello, Idaho and the surrounding area. This unique area offers diverse recreational opportunities including hunting, fishing, biking, and hiking.

Dates Needed:

Approximately November 15th, 2024 through April 15th, 2025

General Information:

Applicant must be willing to accommodate a flexible schedule. Work periods may be up to 7 consecutive days. Housing is NOT provided.

Incumbents must be able to lift/carry up to 60 lbs. with occasional lifting/carrying up to 100 lbs. for short distances and work long, strenuous hours in extreme weather conditions with or without reasonable accommodations.

Job Responsibilities:

This Wildlife Technician isprimarily responsible for assisting with wildlife management activities in the southeastern region. During the fall/winter months, this employee will spend most of their time working on the following: 1) monitoring of collared ungulates and collecting dropped collars, 2) collecting CWD samples from roadkill or harvested deer and elk, and 3) conducting surveys for Pygmy rabbits at sites across southeastern Idaho. Additionally, this employee will participate in mule deer capture efforts, collect data pertaining to winter severity, and work to prevent depredations on stored crops. During the spring months, monitoring sage and sharp-tailed grouse leks will be added to these responsibilities.

The successful applicant will likely assist on several additional projects in the wildlife, habitat, and fisheries programs in the Southeastern Region including fish surveys, monitoring/hazing pelicans, cataloging guzzler conditions, and surveys for other various wildlife species. The technician will work both individually and as a team, and follow standardized protocols to collect biological data. This technician will work on various other wildlife and fisheries management activities as needed.

Skills/Qualifications:

It is preferred that applicantspossess a Bachelors degree in wildlife biology or other closely related field; or equivalent training and work experience.Applicants with experience conducting surveys for wildlife, particularly nongame species such as birds, raptors, and/or bats will be given preference. Proficient in the use of Microsoft applications and experience using topographical maps/software and GPS is a plus.Must be 18 years of age and possess a valid drivers license.
