Purpose of Class

Assists the department Director as requested, provides daily supervision of the Adult Misdemeanor Probation programs and processes; assists in the day to day management of staff compliance, supervises a reduced caseload of assigned adult defendants and performs related work as required and assigned.

Primary Function

The principal function of an employee in this class is to assist in the daily management of the Adult Misdemeanor Probation department including assisting in the over-sight of staff compliance and department operations to work for the reformation and rehabilitation of offenders and protection of the community. Assist with developing internal training opportunities for staff; tracking officer POST training and certification compliance. In addition, this position also manages a reduced case load of assigned misdemeanor offenders. The Chief Misdemeanor Probation Officer\'s work is performed under the supervision of the Adult Probation & Pretrial Director, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. This position serves as the second in command to oversee department operations in the absence of the Department Director. The principal duties of this class are performed in a general office environment with field work that includes exposure to physical and possible health hazards, including mandatory carrying of a firearm and complying with county and POST requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities(will vary by assignment)

Assists in providing oversight of the daily operations of the Adult Misdemeanor Probation department;

Provides direction and support to Probation Officers and other staff

Organizes and executes training of new staff, including FTO POST requirements;

Works with Director in scheduling meetings with community resources;

Oversees inventory and maintenance of all firearms;

Coordinates with Section Supervisor to cover court hearings in the absence of any probation officer (second line of communication);

Coordinates with Section Supervisor to cover probation appointments in the absence of any probation officer (second line of communication);

Coordinates with Section supervisor to oversee home visit schedule of offenders and probation officer schedules;

Attends all meetings/presentations/trainings in the absence of Director when necessary;

Assists Director in employee evaluations and personnel issues (second line of communication with Section Supervisor being the first line of communication with personnel);

Assists staff in program compliance as directed;

Audits probation case files to ensure the minimum standards of supervision are being met for low, medium and high risk offenders;

Overseeing court orders are being followed and appropriate case management is assigned as a result of LSI outcomes and domains;

Assists with developing internal training opportunities for staff;

This position also manages a reduced case load of assigned misdemeanor offenders;

Establish and maintain offender appointments, periodic home visits, phone contacts, employment, etc. in compliance with minimum standards of supervision, court orders and sentencing requirements;

Prepares referrals for mental health, counseling, substance abuse, domestic abuse evaluations, or other evaluations and treatments and monitors attendance and progress of treatment;

Conducts investigations to determine offender adherence to court-ordered conditions;

Receives and reviews monthly or other periodic reports from treatment providers on offenders and takes appropriate remedial actions as necessary;

Monitors restitution and fine payment schedules;

Administers drug and alcohol testing as necessary, enters testing requirements in data system mon toring outcomes and compliance;

Periodically reviews client compliance related to all supervision provisions; monitors all lawful requirements and boundaries;

Monitors compliance of community service ordered;

Sets up and monitors community service of Diversion Court participants

Imposes discretionary jail time as approved;

Monitors Costs of probation, restitution, fines and other fees;

Recommends further conditions, initiates affidavit to revoke, or petitions for reduction to record check or early termination of probation;

Monitors court dockets and calendars and runs record checks to determine additional offenses;

Attends Court and evidentiary hearings; presents recommendations and/or testimony on violations and sentencing;

Monitors inactive probation violation files;

Prepares monthly or other periodic statistical reports/surveys;

Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with County and Court policies, procedures, and safety practices;

Provides a high degree of customer service;
