Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is currently seeking a Staff Systems Engineer to join our team in Plymouth, MN .

The candidate successful candidate for this role will function as the systems engineering team lead for weapon payload development programs of significant complexity and scope in the Fuzing and Warheads Operating Unit. Responsibilities for this position include leading the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge established technical, schedule, and cost constraints. In this role, the individual will interface with program managers, product design and test engineers and customers, and coordinate the work of specialty engineers of various disciplines to analyze, specify and support verification of the system.

Responsibilities will include working independently or in collaboration with more senior Systems Engineers within an IPT environment. The successful candidate will participate or other functions will include functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation studies including allocation to hardware and software, interface definition and management, proposal writing and bidding.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate Systems Engineering activities with project management, project leads and engineers, and functional management.

  • Support the creation of system and subsystem architecture views (functional, physical, power, safety, cybersecurity, etc.).

  • Perform or direct analyses to create and manage requirements, and generate specifications while working closely with internal and external customers, including develop CONOPS and timelines, perform functional decomposition and/or use case analysis, physics-based modeling and simulation,

  • Work closely with design IPTs to manage development of interface control documents and drawings to document the internal and external Interfaces. Support work with the external interface agents to reach consensus on the interface design details.

  • Establish and control baselines implementing configuration management for requirement changes; establish and maintain requirement traceability; decompose, derive and allocate requirements to the architecture; and identify key and major characteristics.

  • Support reporting of metrics which include Key Performance Parameters (KPPs) and Technical Performance Measurements (TPMs), SWaP, and generate weekly reports.

  • Participate in the planning of the verification and validation program; and manage the requirements verification data base. Perform a requirement compliance assessment.

  • Support testing and/or evaluation/validation of complete system and subsystem analytical models or actual system implementation. Supports the application of using system or subsystem analytical models and simulations to validate large scale system behavior.

  • Support the preparation of supporting and presentation materials for SRR, SDR, SFR, PDR, CDR, SVR System Engineering Technical Reviews, Technical Interchange Meetings and other formal program reviews.

  • Prepare or support preparation of trade studies, system sensitivity studies, design optimization studies, system performance assessments, system design assessments, Operations Analysis work such as mission analysis.

  • Support proposals, cost estimates and project planning of the System Engineering scope of projects.

  • Act as the cost account manager to manage cost, schedule, technical performance and monthly earned value management system reporting.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or Computer Science

  • At least 14 years of Systems Engineering experience

  • Ability to obtain a DoD Secret Security Clearance

Additional Qualifications:

  • Previous experience with, or the ability to rapidly learn requirements management tools like IBM® DOORS® and Cameo System Modeler.

  • Knowledge and experience using SysML or UML is highly preferred

  • CMMI experience is preferred


Salary Range: $148,500.00 - $222,700.00

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
