Structural Project Engineer – Plano, Texas (Hybrid)

Intertek’s Building Science Solutions (BSS) group is primarily focused on building enclosure consulting, commissioning, and field performance testing for new construction and retrofit projects.

What are we looking for?

The ideal candidate for this Project Engineer position will have a solid background and experience in structural engineering, as well as interest in building enclosure and building envelope consulting for new and existing buildings. They should also have an interest in leading project teams, developing a client base, building the local BSS team and business, and contributing technically to our overall team.

We are actively working on growing our small structural group beyond an on-demand repair service to long term relationships with clients across the country on structural evaluations, and repair/refurbishment documentation services. A project engineer will support senior engineering staff, as well as run and manager their own projects, building client relationships and pursuing project work, and review of client deliverables, including technical content.

Shift/Schedule: Remote work is acceptable in this position (pending location and ability to travel), with travel to a regional office as requested by management.

What you’ll do:

  • Perform visual structural assessments on a variety of existing building types, and prepare a report of findings and recommendations.

  • Perform structural calculations of various building systems to review or confirm structural capacity.

  • Perform forensic investigations, documentation of existing conditions including structural systems, and various building enclosure systems.

  • Provide remediation design of building systems being structures, building enclosures, components and cladding elements.

  • Perform review of architectural and engineering drawings, shop drawings, request for information, and submittals pertaining to the building enclosures, prototypical designs, and repair documentation.

  • Provide new design consulting and peer reviews of plans and specifications for building enclosures, prototypical designs, and repair documentation.

  • Perform business development activities, building business and clients in the regional area and assisting with national, larger pursuits outside of the local area.

  • Provide construction administration services, including mock-up testing and shop drawing reviews, and conduct factory inspections and site visits.

  • Provide support as the primary client contact for projects and develop client relationships.

  • Prepare professionally written technical reports and design documents for as-constructed condition, repair/refurbishment design, and construction phase services.

  • Litigation and insurance support for projects involving structural systems, when necessary.

  • Develop the scope of services and prepare proposals for new and existing clients.

  • Participation in professional organizations, author papers, attend conferences, and/or perform work on technical committees.

  • Contribute positively to team morale across operating unit, region, and cross Intertek division work.

    Minimum Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Building Design (Architecture), Engineering, or Architectural Engineering

  • 3+ years of industry experience

  • Professional registration or ability obtain registration within three years

  • Technical knowledge of building construction and components

  • Technical knowledge and understanding of building structures (historical and current) and enclosure systems

  • Experience in managing a range of small to large projects

  • Ability to read and understand architectural and engineering drawings and specifications

  • Ability to perform office tasks and physical labor tasks up to 50 pounds

  • Ability to perform work from ladders, boom-lifts, scaffolds, roofs, etc. Work from heights required

  • Ability to efficiently work on projects independently and in a team environment

  • Excellent organizational and project management skills

  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines

  • Strong technical sketching, drawing, writing, and communication skills

  • Ability to nurture client relationships

  • Consistent and professional interaction and communication with clients and project team

  • Active in professional organization(s)

  • Ability to travel with and outside local area, depending on local workload and project locations

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report

    Preferred Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Structural Analysis and wind engineering

  • Field experience with diverse building types

  • Property / façade condition assessments and Visual Structural Assessments

  • Safety Training

  • Software expertise in:

  • AutoCAD LT

  • Bluebeam

  • Excel 3-D Spreadsheets

  • Word and use of “styles”

  • ad/Revit/BIM/Sketch-up proficiency
