Guardian Life Specialty Senior Underwriter in Pittsfield, Massachusetts

The Specialty Senior Underwriter will work with Sales, Underwriting and Products and Pricing to profitably grow Guardian’s revenue and market share. Key objectives will be to achieve targeted sales and earnings goals, and to implement and manage our partners as the assigned underwriter.

Specialty Underwriters work with unique channel partners including Professional Employer Organization (PEO’s), Master Brokers, Technology Partners, and Medical Carrier Partnerships.

You will

• Improve Sales, Revenue and Earnings results on Life, Disability, Dental, Vision, Accident and Supplemental Health products in the Large Market & Strategic Partnerships space

• Have oversight and identification of any barriers to achievement of financial goals (identify evaluate and help Underwriting Leadership and Product & Pricing team to implement potential improvements).

• Participate in Guardian’s underwriting strategies to support key growth goals and to assume an industry leadership position in the PEO & alternative distribution space.

• Help support Specialty Partnerships team management with activities that are key drivers for the team to achieve results. E.g., Help ensure your renewals are on time with renewal cycles and that targets are being met.

• Build relationships externally through broker visits, regular connections and access to brokers, and training/education.

• Provide pricing and plan design for cases with 500-5,000 lives utilizing prior claim experience and manual rates for our Specialty Partnerships.

• Communicate rate/fee development and plan design offered

• Negotiate with sales representatives or agents/brokers to resolve rate questions and discrepancies, or risk related concerns

• Perform accurate financial analysis to determine the risk classification according to company guidelines.

• Participate in project work or on teams to develop or improve underwriting processes.

• Ensure accurate and consistent application of Underwriting Policies and Procedures.

• Apply knowledge of Federal and State legislation related to Group Insurance Products.

You have

• College Degree BS/BA or equivalent work experience.

• 5 years of proven experience with Group Life, Disability, and Dental underwriting.

• Background in experience-based rating and risk assessment.

• Industry related course work is preferred but not required.

• Knowledge of local market competition and strategy (e.g., impact on claim pricing and product choices).

• Excellent analytical and mathematical skills and ability to apply them to complex cases and issues.

• Ability to make decisions, solve problems and meet challenges in completing work.

• Effective use of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint applications.

Location /Travel

Hybrid role - 2 days in the office, 3 days WFH - Preferred locations- Guardian home offices located in Bethlehem, PA, New York NY, Stamford CT, Holmdel, NJ - or in a Guardian sales offices located in Atlanta, Chicago, Boston, Newport Beach, or Piano/Dallas. We will consider candidates outside of preferred locations, offering flexible work arrangements if aligned.

Salary Range

$66,130.00 - $108,640.00

The salary range reflected above is a good faith estimate of base pay for the primary location of the position. The salary for this position ultimately will be determined based on the education, experience, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate. In addition to salary, this role may also be eligible for annual, sales, or other incentive compensation.
