The Vice President for Technology is a member of the organization's senior leadership team,  providing strategic leadership for technology operations, cyber security, data/content management, digital delivery channels, and applications support for Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh's four museums---Carnegie Museum of Art, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Carnegie Science Center, and The Andy Warhol Museum---as well as connecting department functions: Finance, HR, Facilities, Fundraising and Legal. Working closely with the staff from the museums and Connecting Departments, the VP of Technology develops a cohesive vision for, and directs the development and implementation of, innovative, holistic, and sustainable technology solutions to achieve the museums' and the overall organization's missions and improve cost effectiveness and service quality.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or business administration is required; a master's degree in one of these fields is preferred.
  • The candidate must have at least 10 years of work experience in a high user-engagement industry, ideally in a museum or similar environment.
  • Experience in a shared services organization is a plus.
  • A minimum of five years of demonstrated experience effectively managing the delivery of information systems solutions and IT operations is required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

The candidate must be a strong innovator and superior project manager; have excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving abilities; and be able to motivate staff and thrive in a diverse, team- and service-oriented environment. An appreciation of the values of a mission-driven culture is essential. Specific required skills/expertise include:

  • Experience in strategic planning, architecture, systems development, and execution.
  • Ability to negotiate, set, and manage priorities across museums and connecting departments.
  • Experience creating an entrepreneurial and creative environment that fosters creativity and innovation.
  • Proven experience in IT planning, organization, and development
  • Good understanding of computer systems characteristics, features, and integration capabilities
  • Substantial exposure to, hardware platforms, enterprise software applications, digital distribution channels, and outsourced systems and providers.
  • Track record of implementing hybrid cloud business and operational solutions.
  • Experience utilizing third-party developers and vendors to deliver product and services.
  • Experience managing database and content management systems.
  • Knowledge of e-Commerce strategies.
  • Excellent understanding of project management principles and knowledge of business theory, business processes, management, budgeting, and business office operations.
  • Understanding of applicable laws and regulations relating to IT and online accessibility.

*PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: *The position requires close contact with computer monitors for extensive periods of time.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES   

Strategy & Planning

  • As a member of the senior leadership team, participate in overall strategic plannin and contribute to efforts to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the organization.
  • Lead IT strategic and operational planning across the organization.
  • Establish enterprise-wide IT goals, objectives, and operating procedures.
  • Achieve goals by fostering innovation, prioritizing IT initiatives, and coordinating the evaluation, deployment, and management of current and future IT systems.
  • Develop and maintain an appropriate IT organizational structure that supports the needs of the museums and central functions.
  • Ensure effective communication between the museums/central departments and IT. 
  • Maintain awareness of industry trends and new products and identify opportunities for improvements through best practices research and peer benchmarking and analysis, and participate in relevant professional development opportunities.
  • Identify opportunities for the appropriate and cost-effective investment of financial resources in IT systems and resources, including staffing, sourcing, purchasing, and in-house development.
  • Help identify and support opportunities to generate earned and contributed revenue through IT-related efforts, and actively contribute to technology-related fundraising initiatives.
  • Assess and communicate risks associated with IT investments.

Digital Engagement and Content

  • Effectively collaborate with the digital technology team members and museum-aligned digital development staff.
  • Actively participate and lead teams in developing and executing ideas and initiatives; help manage portfolio of projects across museums.
  • Ensure proper analysis of proposed system developments and enhancements; make recommendations; and approve solutions to ensure they meet current needs, provide flexibility for future requirements, and integrate with existing applications.
  • Maintain awareness of industry and museum trends and new products to evaluate opportunities for achieving maximum execution of museum strategies.

Operational Management

  • Ensure continuous delivery of IT services through oversight of service level agreements with end users and monitoring of IT systems performance.
  • Manage IT security and lines of control for current and proposed information systems/technology.
  • Promote and oversee strategic relationships between internal IT resources and external contractors/vendors.
  • Supervise recruitment, development, retention, and organization of all IT staff in accordance with budgetary objectives and personnel policies. Determine staffing needs, ensure delegation of work assignments and coaching for team members. Conduct formal and informal feedback sessions with direct reports to improve quality, productivity, user satisfaction, and cost effectiveness.
  • Develop, track, and control the IT annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Develop business case justifications and cost/benefit analyses for IT spending and initiatives.
  • Direct development and execution of an enterprise-wide disaster recovery and business continuity plan.
