POSITION SUMMARY:

Individual will lead product development technical processes, projects and team members to ensure desired product specifications and consumer experience are achieved for GNC’s private branded products. Responsibilities include but not limited to overseeing and optimizing product sensory evaluations, nutrition/supplement facts panel assessments/drafts, quality control collaboration for testing and release requirements, and pre-development review of technical challenges during paper formulation stages. Individual will collaborate and work across product development (domestic and international), scientific affairs, quality control, packaging, brand and business units. External collaboration will include manufacturer and raw material supplier partnerships related to product development activities. Additionally, the Sr Manager will provide leadership, training and supervision to Technical Product Development staff to exceed departmental and corporate goals.

  • Lead and supervise product development technical activities (self-managed and team-managed) and report on project status, scope, challenges and risks regarding product requirements/specifications and launch timing.

  • Partner with PD project managers to ensure project is meeting all requirements (timelines, costing and product claims/features and sensory requirements).

  • Actively lead, supervise, and participate in troubleshooting with internal and external R&D teams to resolve feasibility, sensory, or other technical challenges.

  • Partner with Science Team in early stage evaluation of ingredients and potential formulation options.

  • Design, optimize and participate in product sensory evaluations and processes:

  • Design based on desired outcome (e.g. acceptability study, discrimination study, triangle tests etc.)

  • Ensure proper sample/ benchmark preparation and retention protocols

  • Provide critical feedback to contract manufacturers / food technologists for next steps

  • Manage discussions with quality control, raw material suppliers, contract manufacturers, and analytical laboratories. (e.g. testing methods, analytical/micro testing challenges, allergen testing, banned substance testing and stability protocols)

  • Ensure product label claims are being met in accordance with product specification targets.

  • Review and develop (where necessary) facts panels for food and dietary supplements to ensure they are meeting labeling requirements based on the Code of Federal Regulations.

  • Review artwork to ensure accuracy for technical aspects (e.g. facts panel and other copy/callouts specifying amounts or features pertaining to ingredient levels or allergens).

  • Analyze and optimize practices, processes and documentation for, but not limited to, sensory evaluation, facts panel creation/review, formulation feasibility analysis, quality control testing and troubleshooting of technical challenges .

  • Foster new and current manufacturer and raw material ingredient relationships to identify opportunities and improve existing collaboration.

  • Create and Lead technical team in a systematic approach to scout for future opportunities in the areas of food science and dietary supplement manufacturing, new product trends, flavor/sensory trends resulting in new products and improvements to existing products.

  • Manage process and uphold ongoing quality related partnerships. (e.g. banned substance testing)

  • Assist in creation and execution of departmental standard operating procedures.

  • Additional duties as assigned.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for supervising multiple projects

  • Responsible for supervising a team of employees

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science / Sensory Science or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the key accountabilities of the job required

  • Advanced degree (MBA, Master’s) preferred

  • 8+ years’ experience in R&D, Product Development or Sensory Science in a technical role required

  • Experience with raw materials/ingredients, quality assurance, and regulatory preferred

  • 5+ years in a leadership role (direct or indirect)

  • Prior managerial/supervisory experience

  • Ability to taste and screen various products and ingredients for flavor and sensory evaluation without dietary limitations.

  • Ability to critically read technical documents/formulations, identify and trouble-shoot challenges, and analyze next steps and timing.

  • High degree of proficiency MS Office Suite, Outlook & Internet applications

  • Strong analytical, prioritizing, interpersonal, problem-solving, presentation, budgeting, project management (from conception to completion), & planning skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills (including analysis, interpretation, & reasoning)

  • Solid understanding and application of mathematical concepts

  • Ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with peers and colleagues across the organization, as well as, internal and external clients

  • Ability to work well autonomously and within a team in a fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment.

  • Ability to work with and influence peers and senior management

  • Self-motivated with critical attention to detail, deadlines and reporting
