POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for managing the sharing of resources between the City of Pittsburgh and partnering community gardens/farms and assisting community volunteers with the planning and coordinating efforts around their community gardens/farms. Works collaboratively with the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Department of Public Works, and the Department of Public Safety’s Ranger program to ensure that community gardens are adequately supported with materials, volunteer support and educational programing.

Qualifying Requirements:

Your City of Pittsburgh application will be reviewed and your work experience and education/training will be evaluated to determine if you meet the qualifying eligibility requirements listed below for this position. You will be sent an eligibility letter regarding your eligible/ineligible status.

  • WORK EXPERIENCE: None required for this position.

  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: The application must clearly show a minimum of an Associate's Degree in Conservation, Environmental Education, Naturalist Education, Sciences or a related field. (See NOTE under the General Application Requirements Section above regarding the verification of education/training).

  • EQUIVALENCY: Work experience may be substituted for education/training on a year for year basis if the application clearly shows the required number of years to meet the Total Qualifying Requirement for this position (based on the sum of work experience and education/training listed above). The Total Qualifying Requirement is two (2) years.

CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATIONS

You must pass the written and/or performance examination(s) in order to have your name placed on the official Civil Service eligibility list for this position. POSITION DUTIES

  • Works with gardeners to develop management plans for the season.

  • Learns and implements best practices for garden management, soil health, harvesting, and food safety.

  • Serves as the liaison between community garden/farm volunteers and City of Pittsburgh; coordinates with DPW and Forestry to fulfill maintenance requests throughout the season.

  • Works with the City of Pittsburgh Park Rangers on the development and implementation of educational program opportunities at partnering community gardens as requested.

  • Ensures that volunteers are supported in getting the fresh fruits and vegetables grown in community gardens to community residents in need of food support.

  • Assists with special events like tree plantings and end-of-season cover cropping.

  • Assists in the development of compost access and the coordination of maintenance for shared compost piles as needed.

  • Creates educational signage about the garden, access to harvest and garden rules.

  • Matches volunteers with community gardens and recruits volunteers as needed.

  • Assists in the coordination of volunteer and recruitment events as needed.

  • Schedules and promotes regular garden work nights.

  • Visits each garden frequently and keep an up-to-date record of garden land an equipment needs (weed control, water, pruning, tools, sheds, tables, etc.).

  • Assists with garden maintenance and harvest as needed.

  • Performs other related duties as required or requested.
