POSITION SUMMARY

The Legislative Aid in the District 1 office assists the Council Member and Chief of Staff by acting as a liaison with the community, addressing constituent concerns, maintaining the Council Member's calendar, positioning the office to provide quality and timely service, attending regular meetings as a representative of the Council Member, and conducting policy research.

Department: City Clerk/City Council

Salary: $65,000 to $72,000 per year.

Qualifying Requirements:

Your City of Pittsburgh application will be reviewed and your work experience and education/training will be evaluated to determine if you meet the qualifying eligibility requirements listed below for this position. You will be sent an eligibility letter regarding your eligible/ineligible status.

  • WORK EXPERIENCE: The application must clearly show two (2) years of full-time professional experience in local government, administration, community engagement, or a related field. (Less than full-time experience will be calculated on a pro-rated basis.)

  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: A Bachelor's Degree in Public Policy, Government Affairs, Public Administration or a related field is required. (See NOTE under the General Application Requirements Section above regarding the verification of education/training).

  • EQUIVALENCY : None permitted for this position.

CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATIONS

If you meet the qualifying requirements listed above, you will be sent a letter of admission (when applicable) for the following examination(s). You must pass the written and/or performance examination(s) in order to have your name placed on the official Civil Service eligibility list for this position. Candidates who receive job offers must pass a medical examination (when applicable) prior to start date.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Engage with constituents (residents of the district) in person, via telephone and email communications.

  • Help constituents access basic city services.

  • Maintain consistent communication with constituents regarding their concerns.

  • Escalate constituent matters when necessary.

  • Provides information pertaining to current issues consistent with policy and direction of the Councilman.

  • Meet with constituents and interested groups to discuss potential legislation.

  • Conduct and summarize legal research.

  • Draft language for ordinances, resolutions, and will of council.

  • Understand legislative process and additional requirements to introduce and pass legislation.

  • Work closely with Councilmember and other Council staff to gain support for legislation.

  • Attend and speak on behalf of Council office at physical and virtual community group meetings (weekday evenings).

  • Familiarize and build relationships with community resources, non-profits and municipal leaders to better serve the needs of D1 constituents.

  • Build and maintain relationships with departmental agencies at the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, and local intergovernmental authorities.

  • Attend events within District 1 on behalf of Councilperson.

  • Performs other related tasks and duties as assigned or required.
