Laboratory Research Technician

The Kenney Lab in the Department of Chemistry seeks a laboratory research technician. The lab is interested in exploring new areas of microbial chemistry, particularly the mechanisms of unstudied enzyme families and the biosynthetic origins and bioactivity of new types of natural products.

The position will involve maintenance and culturing of bacteria, purification of proteins, execution of biochemical assays, and other biochemical work, along with some laboratory upkeep (ordering, preparation of stock solutions and media, instrument maintenance). Prioritization of tasks, detail-oriented execution of experiments and analysis of data, and clear communication will be required for success in this role. The incumbent will report to the PI and work in collaboration with the PI to manage laboratory activities. There may be opportunities to perform independent research.

Job Summary

 

Performs a variety of independent laboratory work and experiments such as determining experimental protocols and preparation of specimens and cultures. Prepares reports of findings subsequent to compilation and analyzation. Oversees specimen inventory. Develops documentation for publication; crafts manuscripts and grant proposals.

 

Essential Functions

Ordering supplies, preparing solutions and media, organizing lab, use of basic technical skills (biochemical, microbiological, math and analytical skills), and operation of specific research instruments.

Physical Effort

Light physical effort (between 1 and 5 pounds) of lifting will occur daily. More intense effort (lifting 4 L solvent bottles or lifting 4 L media flasks for sterilization) may occur more infrequently (on a weekly basis). Research at the bench can be performed sitting or standing, but some assays may require standing for part of the day (hours). Fine motor skills will be required for some experiments.
