UPMC Director, Perioperative and Surgical Services- Shadyside in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Purpose:

This position is accountable for achieving quality patient care through appropriate leadership and utilization of human and fiscal resources in the various departments. The position is accountable for the development, effective operation and evaluation of a program area. This is accomplished through visionary leadership, knowledge of present and future trends, strategic benchmarking and innovative interventions. This position will have administrative oversight of Surgical and Perioperative Services.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the activities related to program planning, goal setting and policy development to support the mission and strategic plan of the Hospital.

  • Responsible for overseeing all surgical and perioperative clinical functions of multi-area concern.

  • Assist and advises the management team in perioperative and surgical services and the VP Operations in the areas of daily clinical operations, financial coordination and long-range planning. Works with the Perioperative and Surgical team members, physicians and hospital administration to develop the strategic direction and implement short- and long-term goals. Ensures effective communication with all key stakeholders.

  • Manages information systems related to clinical and financial data.

  • Negotiate and support various contractual agreements. Responsible for partnership with supply chain management and capital acquisitions for related departments.

  • Promote consumer relations with patients, physicians, community, staff and third party payers.

  • Responsible for the care, security and appearance of equipment and facilities.

  • Secure necessary repairs and renovations.

  • Evaluate products and equipment and recommends acquisition.

  • Responsible for procuring and maintaining inventory of supplies and equipment.

  • Partner with other disciplines by serving on medical staff, Hospital and departmental committees.

  • Application of clinical nursing and anesthesia theory and expertise to daily standard of care practice. - Oversee the monitoring and successful use of patient satisfaction data for departments.

  • Promote cohesive approach of Surgical & Perioperative Services to patient care.

  • Responsible for following the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.

  • Direct development and marketing of programs, in collaboration with other departments to improve clinical services, manage costs and increase revenues.

  • Maintain fiscal accountability for areas of responsibility and motivate appropriate partnering and cooperation within the organization to maximize efficient use of resources.

  • Govern personnel management for areas of responsibility and recruits, coaches and evaluates managers and other staff.

  • Ensure implementation and evaluation of appropriate orientation and continuing education programs.

  • Ensure compliance of operations with federal, state and local regulatory and accrediting agencies by interpreting and applying the law to clinical practice.

  • Assure the development and monitoring of quality assessment and improvement programs and facilitates continuous quality improvement activities promoting customer satisfaction through a multi-disciplinary approach.

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. Master?s degree in nursing, clinical theory or management.

  • Minimum five years of progressively responsible clinical nursing and anesthesia experience to acquire an in-depth knowledge of nursing and anesthesia theory, techniques, equipment and clinical operation.

  • Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with senior management, medical staff, patient caregivers as well as to provide comfort to patients and their families.

  • Oral and written communication skills necessary to effectively communicate goals and objectives, resolve interdepartmental complaints, make management presentations and compose reports.

  • Analytical ability necessary to evaluate unit resources, operations and care and to identify appropriate solutions to complex issues.

  • Clinical nursing and anesthesia theory and skill application.

  • Supports the coordination of research activities within a patient care service.

  • Remains abreast of clinical advances within the field of perioperative nursing and anesthesia (technique, pharmacological, clinical management). Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Registered Nurse (RN)

*Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
