Associate Director - Center for Ethnic Studies Research

The Center for Ethnic Studies Research is seeking an Associate Director (AD) oversees daily operations for the Center for Ethnic Studies Research (CESR) and assists the Director of the CESR in hiring and supervision of staff, managing the Center's budget finances, and implementation of strategic goals. In collaboration with the Director, the AD also has primary responsibility for writing grant proposals, overseeing the execution of grant projects, including tracking and reporting for all grants, and overseeing the collection of data for grant and institutional reporting; participates in the planning, development, and execution of Ethnic Studies programming; consults on funding and development; and develops partnerships focused on the social sciences, humanities, and professional fields such as social work, law, business, public policy, the health sciences, and engineering. The Associate Director likewise works with Global Engagement Colleagues to cultivate and develop international partnerships and U.S.-based study away and study abroad programming, and collaborates with other UCIS centers to develop cross-regional initiatives. In addition, the AD will oversee all public events and CESR academic programs; serve as the Center's primary liaison with social science and humanities departments, professional schools and the public, private, and NGO sectors in Pittsburgh and the region, and attend local and national meetings. The AD must be able to work with minimal supervision, represent the Center in a professional manner, work efficiently on multiple projects, practice good fiscal and project management, and maintain good rapport with staff, faculty, students and partner institutions. Occasional travel and weeknight/weekend hours required.

The Center for Ethnic Studies Research (CESR) offers students and faculty spaces for community-building through collaborative research and professional development opportunities exploring race and ethnicity that include internships, fellowships, certificates, workshops, symposia, partnerships, and an array of other activities. CESR advances innovative multidisciplinary and collaborative research addressing core communities central to Ethnic Studies---Latinx, Asian American, Native American, African American/U.S. African diasporas---from local, regional, comparative, and transnational perspectives.

Minimum 5 years of experience in a University setting with supervisory responsibilities. A Bachelor's degree is required; a Master's or PhD is preferred, preferably in a social science discipline. Experience with spreadsheets and budgets essential. Knowledge of Ethnic Studies (particularly Latinx, Asian American, and/or Africana studies); fluency in English; competence level in Latin American or Asian languages is a plus. The Associate Director reports to the Center Director. This position is full-time, 100% effort (37.5 hours/week). Knowledge and experience related to Ethnic Studies including research, teaching, and/or study away/study abroad programs; English fluency; competence level in Latin American or Asian languages is a plus; Experience working with undergraduate education and/or internship programs; superb writing and communication skills are vital, as well as attention to detail, multi-tasking capabilities, and the ability to work in a fast-paced work environment. Computer literacy is required. Database, web, and Digital Humanities experience a plus. Other requirements include ability to track data for grant proposals, track that activities proposed are implemented, and use success of former proposals and reports to write the next cycle of reports and proposals, as well as the ability to get along well with people at all levels.
