Job Summary:

This position has responsibility for several interrelated roles in Washington, D.C.: (1) administering the Semester in D.C. Program; (2) teaching Semester in D.C. Program classes; (3) supervising Semester in D.C. Program externships; and (4) supporting and counseling students and graduates in pursuing internships and jobs in D.C. This position is for a Co-Director of the program, and work will be done in coordination with the existing director of the Semester in D.C. Program. These roles shall be carried out in close coordination with the Professional Development Office (PDO) and the Externship Program Co-Directors. The position is located in Washington, D.C., and will require occasional travel to Pittsburgh, PA. The individual will report to the Dean. This position will be a part-time position. Due to teaching responsibilities, the position will assume the status of Adjunct Professor of Law.

Responsibility/Duty: Administering Semester in D.C. Program

This position has responsibility for administering the Semester in D.C. Program. This includes circulating announcements for externship and job opportunities; maintaining Semester in D.C. Program informational documents; maintaining the Semester in D.C. Program pages on the Law School's website, its LinkedIn page, and its email lists; maintaining data on interested students, participating students, D.C. Program alumni, and D.C.-area employers and alumni; organizing information sessions for interested students; coordinating Semester in D.C. Program Fellowship applications, awards, and distribution of funds; ensuring that the Semester in D.C. Program externships and summer externships comply with ABA requirements; coordinating and participating in meetings and events with D.C. area employers and alumni; and other communication, marketing, and administrative tasks. The position will include a focus on establishing and maintaining relationships with alumni and potential externship and post-graduation placement sites within Congress and legislative-focused offices. The position is also responsible for coordinating with Pitt's Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA) about our joint D.C. program. This position requires coordination with the Externship Program Co-Directors, the Executive Director of the PDO, the Dean's Office, and other Law School offices. This includes meetings via phone, videoconference, and in person, as well as engagement via email. The incumbent is expected to travel to Pittsburgh occasionally to meet in person at the Law School.

Teaching Semester in D.C. Program classes. The Semester in D.C. Program includes two classroom courses for credit offered during the spring semester: the Policy Colloquium and the D.C. Seminar. The incumbent will co-teach these courses, which meet in the evening in our D.C. office. This teaching role includes significant student mentoring and advising, connecting students with alumni mentors and other points of contact, and other outside-the-classroom engagement, as well as preparation for class and classroom teaching. The position also requires engagement with other Externships and Semesters in D.C. Program faculty and directors online and through participation in conferences and workshops as appropriate.

Supervising Semester in D.C. Program externships. The Semester in D.C. Program includes two externships for credit during the spring semester: the Policy Externship and the D.C. Externship. The incumbent will serve as the faculty member supervising the students' externships, and the externship supervision role includes engagement with prospective employers concerning forms, site visits, the content and quality of the externships, and other required components. This will be done in collaboration with the current Director of the Semester in D.C. program. This position will include a focus on identifying externship opportunities and providing supervision and mentorship fo students with an interest in legislative issues.

Responsibility/Duty: Counseling students and graduates.

This position provides counseling to students and graduates in multiple contexts. The incumbent will counsel students concerning their interest in the Semester in D.C. Program and in pursuing externships or post-graduation jobs in D.C., with a particular focus on building relationships in the legislative sector. This includes assessing whether and how to include the SDC Program within students' academic plans, as well as students' and graduates' marketability and planning networking, credentialing, job search, and application strategies for traditional and non-traditional legal positions, including with government agencies, Congressional offices, and policy and advocacy organizations, as well as other legal and policy employers.

Performance Standards:

  • The incumbent must be a capable teacher and mentor, able to effectively engage with students inside and outside the classroom.
  • The incumbent must be professional, articulate, diplomatic, well-organized, and understand at all times that he/she is representing the Law School and the University when interacting with external entities.
  • The incumbent must have a broad and deep knowledge of the D.C. legal and policy markets.
  • The incumbent must have strong interpersonal skills that allow them to engage effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders, including students, alumni, employers, Law School administrators, faculty, and staff.
  • Strong relationship-building, counseling, and verbal and written communication skills are critical.
  • The position requires that the incumbent have excellent time and project management skills to balance the multiple components of this position.
  • The incumbent must be able both to work highly independently in a remote location and also to coordinate closely and effectively with Law School colleagues from a distance.

Minimum education level required: Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school. An active license to practice law is preferred.

Minimum experience level required: Three years of post-graduate employment experience in the Washington, D.C. area as a licensed, practicing attorney or in a professional policy or advocacy role. Preferred qualifications include five years of post-graduate experience; experience in teaching legal subjects at the graduate or professional level or through continuing legal education; experience with clinical teaching or with supervising students in externships; experience in the federal government or non-profit sectors; demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse communities. Experience working with federal or state legislative bodies or legislative-focused offices is strongly preferred.

The amount of supervision received by the employee: This position reports to the Dean. After the initial orientation, the incumbent will coordinate closely with the Executive Director of the Professional Development Office and the Externship Program Co-Directors but must perform duties and responsibilities independently in D.C.

The analytical skill required: The job requires excellent analytical and communications skills in its teaching role as well as for student/alumni counseling and interaction with alumni, and contacts at government agencies, Congressional offices, non-profit organizations, law firms, and other employers are an essential element to this position.

The level and budget volume (dollar amount) of financial responsibility/accountability: This position is responsible, in conjunction with the Law School, for the Semester in D.C. Program Fellowships ($500-$5,000).
