VMware Sr. Software Engineer - Opportunity for Working Remotely in Phoenix, Arizona

The Tanzu Mission Control team is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to help build out our Lifecycle Management (LCM) functionality, and advance our mission to make Kubernetes accessible to any enterprise. The Tanzu Mission Control (TMC) team is focused on helping customers more easily manage Kubernetes and operate modern, containerized applications across multiple clouds and clusters. The LCM team is responsible for the functionality of creating, managing, and maintaining clusters across various cloud providers, and a critical component in the success of the TMC product. On this team, you will have the opportunity to work on some highly visible and large impact initiatives within the VMware family of products.
We are looking for an engineer to help build, expand, and maintain services that enable customers to onboard smoothly and to scale TMC to meet the ever-growing needs of our customers. The team is a fast-paced, startup-like environment where you will have the opportunity to build a new business from the ground up while developing skills in cutting-edge technologies.
What is the primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?
TMC LCM team is looking for someone with a strong technical vision, a demonstrated record of delivering complex SaaS products, and experience working with Kubernetes Cluster management. You can expect to collaborate with product management and engineering teams to build out our SaaS offering which solves lifecycle management challenges across a fleet of Kubernetes clusters.
You will be working with the team to design and implement new features to provide them with additional robust tools and features to create and manage their Kubernetes clusters. You will also work on services and tools that enable other teams to accelerate their development and allow them to easily scale their services.
Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?
As a Senior member of the team, your role will primarily focus on leading designs and building complex features with many interdependencies across teams, leading the execution and delivery of components, and coaching other team members to build a strong culture of operational excellence.
Success looks like:
Independently designing and making significant contributions to key features on the LCM roadmap
Having a strong understanding and working knowledge of Kubernetes Clusters, Kubernetes Image management, Cluster lifecycle management
Proactively leading team processes and quality standards, and mentoring more junior team members in reaching those bars
Proactively works to facilitate team collaboration, and driving the team to sprint deliveries
Establishing a relationship of trust and leadership with the team, and becoming an influential voice in the success of the team
Representing the team and product in cross-team design discussions, identifying dependencies and areas of impact
Be able to take general guidance from product and engineering leadership, identify areas of ambiguity, complexity, and risk, and propose solutions
Proactively makes proposes and improvements to the benefit of the team
At the Senior level, your personal success is directly related to the success of the team
What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?
As part of the Tanzu Mission Control - Lifecycle Management team:
Most of your time will be developing microservices using cloud-native technologies like Kubernetes, gRPC, REST APIs, databases, Message queues, distributed tracing, monitoring and more. All of our services are written in Go.
You will write automated tests in Go to validate and secure critical customer functionality
You will be responsible for delivering your code changes to production, and monitoring/maintaining our CI/CD pipelines.
You will take on-call responsibilities where you will triage, troubleshoot, and mitigate production issues.
Work directly with Technical Project Managers and Product Managers to better understand requirements, and define the scope of work
You’ll be given responsibility for high level epics, and be asked to help define requirements and tangible deliverables. You will be expected to break down the work into individual work items that can be assigned to the team, and lead in estimating and scoping.
You can expect to collaborate with partner teams, to identify dependencies, and align on delivering cross-team initiatives
You’ll work closely with management to understand priorities, and advocate for them on the team

Remote: This role is fully remote and can be done anywhere in North America.
