Salary Grade: T25 Learnmoreaboutthe"T"salary structure here:https://careers.temple.edu/sites/careers/files/documents/TSalaryStructure.pdf Job Summary: The Temple University College of Science and Technology is seeking a full-time skilled machinist for its College Research and Technical Support Facility located on Temple's Main Campus. The Shop fabricates 'one of a kind' custom parts and modifies existing apparatus for research and instructional use within the College. The successful candidate should be able to interpret, set up, fabricate, and maintain tolerances as defined by drawings and sketches provided by the Shop designer. The person should be capable of suggesting fabrication techniques, including material choices, most appropriate to design criteria required by research faculty and graduate students. The successful candidate is expected to manage and lead the work of others. The Tool & Die Maker/Machinist position will serve the CST research needs to assemble and machine components after consultation with faculty members based on agreed-upon technical drawings, including the ordering of raw materials. The machinist will assemble, repair, and fabricate metal parts by operating mechanical equipment. Ability and knowledge to use cam software to program equipment. Uses blueprints and design sketches to ensure the proper dimensions and tolerance levels of the finished product. The incumbent should be familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures and capable of suggesting fabrication techniques most appropriate to design criteria required by research, faculty, graduate students, and staff. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of complicated tasks. Ability to work independently and effectively is essential. The machinist is required to have a certain degree of creativity and latitude. Perform other duties as assigned. Master CAM experience preferred Experience with of Ferrous, Non-Ferrous metals and plastics Computer skills in Microsoft Office preferred Experience with basic CAD software and Machine language (Master CAM experience preferred) maintaining assorted mills, lathes, surface grinders and sheet metal fabrication machines. variety of machine shop tools. Direct discussion of needs for CST research programs with CST faculty members. Communication and training of graduate students and postdocs. Ordering of raw materials and tools. Prototyping design and fabrication of unique parts Experience with operation both CNC milling machines, toolroom lathes and of shop equipment. Machining and assembling of components according to agreed-upon specifications. Assembly of components in CST research labs. Estimate of project material cost and labor charged to research accounts in discussion with principal investigators. Logging of research accounts for specific machining and assembly requests. Basic computer skills (ex. Email and Microsoft Excel) preferred Required Education & Experience: At least five years of experience in operating and maintaining standard machine shop equipment. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Required Skills & Abilities: Experience with CNC programming software and setup. Ability to follow safe operating practices, safety procedures and relevant hazardous waste/environmental protection policies always. Good communication skills to teach basics of shop fabrication to graduate students working in the adjoining Student Shop. Ability to lan, set up, and operate typical machine shop tools, producing parts to tolerances and specifications. Effectively use typical machinist's hand-tools and all equipment. Experience machining metals and plastics. Ability to operate and maintain assorted milling machines, lathes, surface grinders, and sheet metal fabrication machines. Preferred: Experience with TIG welding of stainless steel for high vacuum and MIG welding of structural aluminum.
