The lead HR compliance specialist position contributes to Starbucks' success by developing and implementing programs to ensure compliance with local labor and employment regulations and standards. The Lead specialist trains and promotes compliance behaviors, facilitates proper decision-making, audits and provides feedback to operations leaders, and provides Starbucks partners with the tools and resources needed to adhere to Starbucks procedures, local labor regulations, and ordinances. The senior specialist coaches and guides in a manner consistent with Starbucks' mission and values and is a role model for our guiding principles. This role supports the Philadelphia Market and will be expected to live in or around the area.

As an hr compliance specialist, you will ...

  • Maintains knowledge and understanding of local, state, and federal labor and employment compliance requirements. Maintains knowledge and understanding of company processes, systems, and tools that link to partner timekeeping records and scheduling.

  • Creates, maintains, and facilitates training for field leaders to instill knowledge of local regulations and reinforce expected behaviors. Primary audience = district managers and store managers.

  • Reviews field data related to areas of compliance and exercises judgment to identify regional trends, determine gaps in understanding of local regulations, and coach retail leaders accordingly. Shares insights with field regional directors of operations and the partner resources director with recommendations for action.

  • Coordinates and monitors compliance responsibilities at the district and store level; executes region-wide compliance or multi-market compliance responsibilities.

  • Provides consultation and support to managers, field leaders, partner resources generalists, and legal and functional specialists on compliance guidelines, procedures, and local legislation.

  • Dedicated field time through shoulder-to-shoulder work with store and district managers to build field leader capability and elevate the Starbucks experience by coaching for compliance through the lens of our Mission and Values.

  • Conducts audits for compliance and provides feedback to store and multi-unit leaders. Collects audits and maintains confidential document returns. Maintains company compliance reporting, records, and related documentation.

  • Works cross-functionally to promptly resolve compliance issues and partner concerns. Provides consultation support to managers addressing partner conduct and performance issues related to compliance with guidance from the partner resources business partner, sr., or partner resources support center.

  • Conducts labor and employment compliance investigations at the direction of the partner resources director or director of corporate counsel, labor, and employment.

  • Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of tools and processes; provides recommendations to improve effectiveness.

  • Responsible and accountable for maintaining and protecting the personal information of current and separated partners.

  • Serves as a regional partner resources team member and reports to the Partner Resources Director. Works as an advocate on behalf of all partners and the business. Solicits and listens to partners' concerns and takes an active role in resolving problems. Supports the implementation of company policies, procedures, and partner resources practices.

  • Independently leads the region in ensuring regional compliance.

  • May support and deliver additional compliance-related work within the assigned region

Basic Qualifications

  • Education (minimum education level, degree, or certification required):

  • High school or GED

  • Years of experience in a specific field or utilizing designated skills:

  • Previous management, compliance, human resources, or legal experience (2 years)

  • Experience working in customer service (2 years)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree or Certificate in Human Resources-related discipline preferred

  • Experience researching, analyzing, and problem-solving in a fast-paced environment (2 years)

  • Experience handling and securing confidential and sensitive information (1 year)

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Microsoft Project)

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing

  • Strong customer service skills with demonstrated composure and professionalism

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

  • Ability to multi-task, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines with a high level of stress tolerance and with strengths in detail orientation, planning, and organizing

  • Ability to apply consultative skills in a business environment

*If you are working in CA, CO, IL, LA, ME, MA, NE, ND or RI, you will accrue vacation up to a maximum of 120 hours (190 in CA) for roles below director and 200 hours (316 in CA) for roles at director or above. For roles in other states, you will be granted vacation time starting at 120 hours annually for roles below director and 200 hours annually for roles director and above.

The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity. At Starbucks, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
