KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Strong knowledge of mental health issues affecting children and adolescents, as well as understanding of evidence-based intervention strategies and therapeutic approaches. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with students, parents, educators, and external agencies. Ability to respond effectively to mental health crises and provide appropriate support and intervention. Strong organizational and time management skills to manage multiple responsibilities and prioritize tasks effectively. Knowledge and adherence to ethical guidelines and professional standards in mental health practice. Ability to work closely with school administrative teams as well as district-level administration to coordinate consistent support throughout the district.

Job Summary

School-based mental health therapists play a crucial role in promoting the psychological well-being of students, fostering a positive school climate, and supporting academic success. They are often trained in various therapeutic modalities and work closely with the school community to address mental health concerns early on and provide the necessary support and interventions.

REPORTS TO: Mental Health Coordinator

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Conducting initial assessments: School based mental health professionals are responsible for conducting initial assessments of clients to determine their mental health needs and develop a treatment plan.
  2. Developing treatment plans: School based mental health professionals develop individualized treatment plans for each student that may include a combination of individual counseling and or group therapy.
  3. Providing counseling services: School based mental health professionals provide both individual and group counseling services to students within the school system.
  4. Monitoring client progress: School based mental health professionals monitor client progress, regularly assessing the effectiveness of treatment and making appropriate referrals. Mental Health Professional will also communicate regularly with parents/guardians.
  5. Documenting client progress: School based mental health professionals maintain accurate and detailed records of client progress, including treatment plans, progress notes, and other relevant information.
  6. Collaborating with other healthcare professionals: School based mental health professionals may collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as primary care physicians, psychiatrists, social workers, and appropriate school staff to provide comprehensive care to clients. This may also include attending IEP meetings when deemed necessary.
  7. Providing crisis intervention: School based mental health professionals provide crisis intervention services to students who are experiencing acute mental health crises.
  8. Adhering to ethical and legal standards: School based mental health professionals adhere to ethical and legal standards, maintaining client confidentiality and complying with applicable laws and regulations.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT: 9) Keep abreast of current trends in counseling and mental health. 10) Maintain continuing education requirements based on licensing requirements.

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSBILITIES: 11) Maintain professional and ethical standards as outlined by the American School Counselor Association and the Code of Ethics pertaining to appropriate licensure. 12) Keep updated on student/school legal issues and follow established procedures. 13) Perform and fulfill professional responsibilities.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position classification requires light work that involves sitting, and some lifting of up to 50 pounds unassisted, and over 50 pounds with assistance. It may require walking, standing, or sitting for extended periods or may require immedia e response in the event of emergencies or disaster and the ability to work well under stressful circumstances.The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
