Shell Maintenance Lead - Holland Hydrogen in Pernis, Netherlands

Project Background

This job position presents a unique opportunity to become part of the asset team of Holland Hydrogen 1, a ground breaking large scale Green Hydrogen electrolysis asset and a first of its kind in Europe. Join us in strengthening our uniquely diverse and international team of operations and maintenance technicians (O&M)

As the successful candidate for the role, you will report to the Operations and Maintenance Team lead and contribute to the successful commercial operations of the asset. The team is responsible to deliver and operate a safe and highly reliable but flexible asset.

Job Purpose & Accountabilities

Maintenance Lead – Holland Hydrogen 1 Asset (JG5)

The Maintenance Lead is responsible for the safe and efficient maintenance of the process facilities, safety systems and utilities to ensure production of Hydrogen in accordance with production plans, targets and specifications. To this effect, the maintenance lead is responsible as the lead to fully maintain the facility together with the O&M technicians (on shift) and the support from contractors.

As the HH1 organization is very small, all staff will be required to be flexible in role and activities. As such, this role will also require to be trained in a second skill to broaden the range of scope you are able to work on. For candidates with an operations background, this will likely be a maintenance discipline such as instrumentation, rotating equipment, electrical or others. If you have a maintenance background in any discipline, the second skill in development would be the process operations and panel operations skillset.

The maintenance lead will for example also be responsible for the cleaning & waste management, spare part management, warehouse management, maintenance training program, supporting the O&M team, etc. In the Holland Hydrogen project we are focusing on predictive maintenance, which is relatively new in the industry and something that will require a high level of atomization and ownership. Experience in these areas of expertise are consider to be beneficial.

In the Holland Hydrogen project we are focusing on predictive maintenance, which is relatively new in the industry and something that will require a high level of atomization and ownership.

Since we are looking to build a multi-skilled team, we are interested to hear from all interested candidates with either operations and/or maintenance background in the process industry, that are keen to broaden and apply their skillset.

During the project phase (construction and commissioning) the maintenance lead will also be responsible for developing and execution of the cleaning and preservation scope, hands-on support for the CSU team (system de-spading, waste management, install/organize temporary equipment, organizing vendor support, QA/QC, punch rounds, etc.) . An integrated CSU team is consisting of Shell staff, contractor staff, vendor support and other specialists will be executing these activities to achieve on-time start-up of the facility.

Next to the commissioning efforts, you will also contribution to the development of work procedures, standard maintenance procedures (spading plans, de-comm, catalyst loading, overhaul of an electrolyser, overhaul of a CPD, etc.) training programs and more. This includes both the development of, but also the participation in these training programs, to equip you and the future operations and maintenance team with the right skills and experience to start-up the asset successfully.

Dimensions

HH1 is a 200MW electrolysis facility, one of the largest in Europe, producing up to 80t/d of green hydrogen. This is a first of its kind, with new technologies and suppliers. Therefore a learner mindset is a key pillar of the team culture, as there is novelty around every corner. Also, a large part of the asset is high voltage electrical equipment (380kV), which is a new challenge for the organization.

Frontline responsibility for end to end O&M processes of the asset, including approximately 50% of maintenance activities expected to be executed by own O&M Technician pool. The O&M organization requires a wide variety of ‘second skills’ maintenance capabilities within the team.

Specifically, we are looking to develop several team members with a background (or interest) in Quality Measurement Instrumentation, Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I), Process Control (PAC), and Rotating Equipment. This is required on top of the core operatorship skills and experience we need in the team mix.

Naturally, we would be looking for self-driven individuals that are excited by multi-disciplinary problems, and have a hands on mentality on any topic. Curiosity, and what Shell would call ‘having a learners mindset’ is essential in this new business.

Future ambitions for the HH1 operations model include remote regional operations, but the initial working location will be the HH1 site at the Tweede Maasvlakte in the Rotterdam Harbour. Initially the role will start working day-shifts only, in support of the project construction and the commissioning activities, as well as going through an extensive training program. It is expected that from late 2025 we will transition to a full shift rotation, working a 5 shift rotation scheme. The Maintenance lead will continue in day shift as part of the HH1 asset organization.

Inclusive and diverse workplace

Working at HH1 means working at the frontline of Hydrogen Production and at an asset of the future. The asset requires to be operated in close collaboration with the Power Trading business, as well as our customers. As such, panel operations and other roles have significant exposure to commercial and trading interfaces.

HH1 being a lighthouse project for the Hydrogen manufacturing business, comes with additional expectations and challenges. This includes a large focus on sustainable day-to-day operations, waste elimination and treatment, and English as primary language to allow efficient interaction with a global community. This means all procedures, meetings and records, and daily conversation will be in English.

The Holland Hydrogen 1 project is a very progressive environment for Shell, where we are showcasing our plans for the future of the energy industry. We are deliberately aiming to build a balanced team, representing a diverse cross section of society.
