THE POSITION

Are you eager to start a new chapter in your railroad career? If so, the Public Utility Commission (PUC) has an immediate need for an experienced operating practice inspector to join our dynamic group of state inspectors. This position gives you the opportunity to ensure compliance with operating rules and practices to minimize injuries due to train accidents. Join our department and keep your career moving!

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Track Railroad Safety Inspector, you will focus on minimizing the risk of human casualty and societal loss due to train accidents that are caused by human error, fatigue of railroad employees, qualifications of railroad employees, and failure of proper testing of employees. This position ensures compliance with operating rules and practices; administration of federal alcohol and drug control programs; hours of service for railroad employees involved with the movement of trains; federal locomotive engineer and conductor certification standards; occupational safety conditions and reporting; and employee training and qualification. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Planning and implementing a program of periodic inspections of railroads

  • Conducting follow-up inspections

  • Investigating serious railroad accidents

  • Examining carrier records

  • Investigating complaints from railroad employees, the general public, or government representatives

    Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 7.5 hours per day

  • AWS (alternate work schedule) may be available upon successful completion of a 6-month probationary period

  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 60-minute lunch.

  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Four years of railroad experience in track maintenance and safety inspections;or

  • Four years of railroad experience in locomotive and rail car maintenance and safety inspections;or

  • Four years of railroad experience in train movement, management, handling, and operating practices;or

  • Four years of railroad experience in train movement, management, and handling of hazardous materials;or

  • Four years of railroad experience in signal and train control maintenance and safety inspections.

Special Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid Pennsylvania driver's license

    Post Employment Requirement:

  • Passage of the appropriate Federal Railroad Administration Qualification Examination within twelve months of the date of appointment.

    Other Requirements:

  • This specific position requires four years of railroad experience in train movement, management, handling, and operating practices.

  • Candidate must either live in or be willing to relocate to one of the following counties within 6 months of employment: Lancaster, Chester, Delaware Philadelphia, Montgomery, Bucks, Berks, Lebanon, Schuylkill, Lehigh, Northampton, Monroe, Carbon, Luzerne, Columbia, Sullivan, Wyoming, Lackawanna, Wayne, Pike, Susquehanna, Bradford, Franklin, Adams, York, Cumberland, Perry, Dauphin, Juniata, Mifflin, Snyder, Union, Northumberland, Montour, Lycoming, Tioga.

  • Additional travel will be required in Potter, Clinton, Centre and Fulton counties.
