THE POSITION

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This is journey level machinist trades work in the vocational training of inmates at a state correctional facility.

An employee in this job provides structured on-the-job training and shop instruction for the vocational training of inmates in the machinist trade to promote employability upon reintegration to the community. Work involves the close supervision and instruction of inmates during classroom and on-the-job training and work assignments. Employees are responsible for the care, custody, and control of inmates during training and work assignments. Work is received in the form of work orders which may be accompanied by drawings, sketches, blueprints, or models. Employees independently determine procedures, tools, equipment, and materials to be used by inmates during vocational training and assignments. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed by a technical or administrative supervisor through conferences, reports, and inspection of completed assignments in accordance with industry and trade competency standards.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.):

  • Instructs inmates in the practices, methods, and procedures of the machinist trade using appropriate lesson plans and training materials.

  • Uses and explains drawings, sketches, blueprints, and models.

  • Demonstrates, explains, and instructs on the methods, procedures, materials, and tools used in the shaping and fashioning of metal items by using lathes, shapers, planers, drill presses, milling machines, taps, dies, and reamers as well as the use of micrometers and other precision-type measuring devices.

  • Plans and assigns work to inmates receiving machinist training and reviews and inspects work in progress and upon completion for adherence to machinist trade standards.

  • Participates in work activities of the machinist trade at the journey level and assists inmate workers with complex assignments.

  • Requisitions, issues, and collects tools, supplies, materials, and equipment required to carry out inmate training and work assignments.

  • Searches inmates and work areas for contraband and ensures security of work area.

  • Maintains order and discipline among inmate workers.

  • Maintains records for maintenance, repairs, training progress, inventory, wage, and attendance.

  • Work may be assigned and performed in areas other than the machinist trade in a manner consistent with organizational and operational requirements.

    Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment.

  • Work hours are 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday - Friday.

  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable. Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $48,425.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Five years of experience in the set-up and operation of varied equipment utilized in the fabrication of metal parts or tools;or

  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship in the machinist trade;or

  • An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes one year of journey level work in the machinist trade.
