Job Description Summary

The Assistant County Attorney is responsible for assisting the County Attorney as delineated in K.S.A. 19-706b. Representing the State of Kansas as a trial attorney, represent the petitioner, and represent State/law enforcement. Respond to major crime scenes. Provide training. Works under general supervision.

Job Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review police reports and audio/video to determine whether charges should be filed. Follow-up with law enforcement on any additional investigation needed.
  • Respond to questions from law enforcement, probation, and the court.
  • Represent the petitioner in juvenile offender and child-in-need cases.
  • Exercise considerable independent judgment.
  • Represent the State of Kansas as a trial attorney in felony, misdemeanor, and traffic cases.
  • Represent the petitioner in mental illness and alcoholic commitment cases.
  • Research and write legal motion and responsive pleading.
  • Prepare for and attend court hearings.
  • Provide advice and assistance to law enforcement agencies with 24/7 availability.
  • Review probation revocation requests.
  • Represent the State in probation revocation proceedings.
  • Review probation termination requests.
  • Review requests for diversion.
  • Draft and review legal pleadings for signature.
  • Review criminal histories of defendants and witnesses.
  • Monitor individuals in jail.
  • Review search warrants.
  • Read and analyze new case law.
  • Research and write appellate briefs.
  • Provide training to law enforcement.
  • Give presentations to civic organizations, non-profit groups or others as assigned.
  • Represent the State/law enforcement in civil forfeiture proceedings.
  • Read and analyze new legislation.
  • Present oral arguments to the Court of Appeals and Kansas Supreme Court as requested.
  • Attend training in-state that may require an overnight stay.
